huh? Gravity Shift and Shift
« on: March 07, 2008, 04:51:42 PM »
Someone explain how does a pearl get placed in a the heavy oil catagory? Another thing...the first Shift is a particle pearl and that can't outhook the Gravity? Is the core that much different as well?

Just speaking from a numbers standpoint (I've never thrown either), the GS has a lower RG than the original Shift, which makes it an earlier rolling ball, better for heavy oil.  Granted the covers are different (Both R2X pearl vs R2S pearl particle), the original Shift will get started later and have trouble gripping the lane on heavier/longer conditions.  Cover prep could also make me a liar.

It may not make sense based on the basics of bowling balls, but it is true ... most of the time.

GRAVITY has the new R2X cover and a lower RG (early starting) core compared to the SHIFT. I am able to use the GRAVITY on fresh oil as long as it's not a flood. It revs up easy and is incredibly strong all the way. I would say the GRAVITY has the least squirt of any shiny especially pearl shiny I have ever thrown.

Regular SHIFT starts up much later and sometimes is a little squirty on a fesh pattern.

The only caveats I would offer is that if there is a lot of oil the SHIFT's light particle load is going to give it more traction if there is a lot of oil, but in those cases you probably are going to want something like a SPECIAL or ATTITUDE anyway.

I think Storm might have been better off putting the GRAVITY in a whole new line to avoid any confusion cuz it is totally different than the regular SHIFT.

Reiterating what riggs said, the Gravity is a different beast from any pearl cover that's rolled off the Storm production line.  I've never been a big fan of their pearl covers unless there's alot of friction to get them started but the Gravity is very strong throughout and reads the entire lane giving a much more readable reaction even with the factory finish on heavier oil.  I haven't used mine enough to give an informed opinion, but I think the cover is a big step forward for Storm based on what I've seen so far.  With my higher rev rate and medium speed, I would love to see the new R2X cover on the Agent core because asymmetrical cores generally don't give me enough continuation off the break point to be very versatile for my style.

Is it just me are are these cover/core match-ups backwards. Why not put the R2S Pearl Particle coverstock around the SHAPE-LOCK HD core and the  R2X Pearl Reactive coverstock around the SHAPE-LOCK core? Or have I stumbled upon an upcoming release?

I've laughed at Storm before and been proven wrong, so I'll keep my mouth shut. When the original X-Factor came out, I went in to buy a "heavy-oil ball" and that's what my pro shop tried to sell me. I quietly laughed under my breath and bought something else.

A couple of months later, I went back in and got the X-Factor anyway. And lo and behold, it *was* a heavy-oil ball at that time. It took a couple of years before houses started laying down too much oil for that thing. I still have that ball.

So while it might be counterintuitive to say the Gravity is stronger than the Shift, it just might be. I know there was a lot of talk about the Gravity's new coverstock being "revolutionary" a month or two back.

BrianCRX, I was with you on this.  In fact I commented in a different thread saying the same thing.  But, I was told similar stuff to what we're reading here.  The new Gravity Shape Block stronger than the Shift Shape block along w/the R2X cover.  I do notice that my Gravity has that tacky type feeling & is supposed to read the midlane sooner than the Shift.  So maybe both OOB the Gravity is more for the oil than the Shift.  The last 2 weeks I have used my Gravity late 2nd & all 3rd game after the Attitude & Special.  This week I'm leaving my Attitude at home & may try my Gravity all 3 games or start w/my Special for 1st only & see what happens.  I'll bring out my regular Shift just in case.  I knocked the polish off of it & I kind of want to see what happens to the reaction w/it.  I'll keep you posted.

The gravity shift can definetely handle some oil. Mine is  a totla beast also out hooks the original shift by a mile. the original shift is the squirtiest ball I ever seen.

So is this ball (Gravity) somewhat like the Paradigm? That ball was a pearl but I could hook it easily on most heavy patterns...just had a much different reaction opposed to a solid oil ball but still handled a good amount of oil.

This may be a bad example...or maybe not but once I owned the Eraser and the Eraser particle pearl at the same time period. Even when my original Eraser had a ton of games...and I mean a ton, the particle pearl was squirty on heavier oil and the original actually hooked a little more and didn't "skid out". A small reaction due to the amount of oil but still hooked consistantly. Both balls were drilled 5" to the PAP with the CG kicked to the right. However, on medium conditions/shorter patterns, the particle pearl hooked earler and a little harder then the pearl reactive.

Here is a little comparison. I'm getting ready for a 9 game tournement and decided to take a few balls out for a comparision on some med-heavy with carrydown. Well to my suprise the Gravity really performed well on this condition I must say the ball hung in there with a 1000 grit Rising that I would normaly use for heavier oil patterns. My only complaint is I can only use the ball for about a game on a normal league meduim oil shot and in the bag it goes.Let me tell you I usually get a pretty good start on the night if that tells you anything.
