Yes - polish it or adjust however you feel if does burns up. from what I have experienced, the sync takes to surface adjustments very well.
I have adjusted my sync to be able to play it on more patterns other than 'soup'. I think the sync that is polished is a very playable piece that gives me decent recovery on THS. I have seen many others (higher rev players) polish the sync with great success as well. I play around with surface on most things until I get my desired results.
Either ball you mentioned will be different than the wrecker you throw now. Both are considerably smoother and the sync is a stronger piece than the ROP.
