Building a 3 ball arsenal, input please
« on: May 10, 2015, 03:41:47 PM »
Hello all,

I am looking to build a 3 ball arsenal and looking at Storm/Roto primarily.  I am open to most anything either of them make and really want to get thoughts in the IQ Tour solid, the hyper cell skid, the crux pearl and the rocket.  Please share input and what three balls you would suggest most.

About me, avg 225, about 375+ revs and mainly on medium to heavier mediums rarely ever see true heav oil.

I have the Skid and the Rocket and owned the IQ Tour.

If you never bowl on sport shots, those 3 would be just fine. The Skid is now my house shot benchmark ball. It's pretty even rolling despite being an asymmetrical with a strong cover with polish. The Rocket is a step down and will go long and snap hard off the friction. The IQ Tour is a good option when you want an earlier rolling motion with less back end. For me, the IQ Tour did not come out much on house shots. I used it almost exclusively on sport shots. However, there are some nights where controlling the back end (even on a house shot) comes into play, especially for those with a decent amount of hand.

I agree with jkirkerz' idea of getting a benchmark ball and choosing a ball up/down based on the benchmark. If I had to narrow my arsenal down to 3, mine would be

Roto Grip Sinister (heavier)
Hyroad (benchmark)
Natural Pearl (dry/spare; can substitute with a Pitch Black)

Those are the the 3 that have worked for me and I normally bring to practice...I have yet to find a lane condition to be unplayable with those 3. I found hybrid coverstocks to be incredibly versatile and are my main choices when I have to minimize the number of balls in my arsenal. I can use the Sinister or the Marvel S on fresh/heavier oil, but Marvel S' NRG coverstock/core combo is way too strong at times; I can use the Sinister on even medium-dry at times if I'm hooking the whole lane. Of course, I bring an array of abralon pads to get the reaction I want if I'm on a limited arsenal and want to be versatile. Good luck!

I have many Roto balls in my arsenal -- but the 3 I use the most are -- Hyper Cell - Hyper Cell Skid - Rising Star -- I will also throw in my Soul.  These balls re-act the best for my style and lane conditions. But since you don't see heavy oil, you may not need the H/C, look at the Sinister. I definitely  recommend the Skid, it has a great roll with very good length, and stores its energy for the back end. I know the Rising Star has been discontinued, so you will need to research on just what exactly you may want for drier conditions, maybe an Uproar?

I'm sort of wondering what you are using currently, based on you having a 225 average.  Most 225 bowlers already know what balls they need to make up an arsenal, that is unless you are changing ball manufacturers from what you currently use.

Is that 375 rev rate mated to a 19 mph ball speed or closer to 15 mph?  Makes a big difference.

So much depends on your game.  I think I would start with the Tour Solid which seems to be a favorite of many styles.  I really like the new Ride, which gives me some hold on house shots and allows me to line up similar to how I do with a urethane ball, but handles carrydown much better.  Strong ball is where it really gets to be a matter of preference.  I like strong heavy rolling pearls, but most people would opt for more surface.

If I were to make a three ball arsenal with Storm exclusively I would select the following: IQ Tour Nano, IQ Tour, and Pitch Black. If I had alternatives I would have the Crux and HyRoad on the bench.

-IQ Tour Nano: I am a fan of control and this ball gives you control along with the ability to handle heavier oil conditions if needed.

-IQ Tour: This is Storm's benchmark ball and every arsenal/bowler needs a benchmark ball.

-Pitch Black: Gives the ability to handle lighter oil and use as a spare ball if needed.

I would swap out the Crux and HyRoad with the IQ Tour Nano and IQ Tour because I feel they could fit my style as well. The best thing to say is that your arsenal will be whatever best fits your style. Also a lot of trial and error.
