i need generalized comments here...dry lanes help
« on: December 20, 2012, 04:55:57 PM »
One of my centers is neglecting to fix the shot that is becoming very dry week to week.

I usually only buy higher end pieces....and from that you guys can do the math.

In terms of mid price pieces...that i have left are pearl or hybrid I have a crossroad and a hyroad

I don't need gurus getting super technical BUT I would like to discuss what to get and why.

I do line up pretty deep...and all of storms recent pearl symmentricals have something to offer that intrigues me.

OK so here's the 5 I have in order of what I think will be the best fit, granted I don't need a super dry lanes ball...just a little push down lane to help me from forceing the ball all night. I bowl on wood lanes fyi.

1. Fringe is probably the best choice...weakest of all 4
2. VR pearl..just because I have the crossroad, and it almost does the trick
3. Fire road, I assume the cover is too strong, but I loved the VE at this house
4. IQ tour pearl...its got the low flaring core, but the cover is probably too strong.  The marvel pearl did not work at all at this house, but the fit was off.. punched up at baton rouge
5. Bandit....recently purchased a outlaw and LOVE it..but how strong is the cover? I assume it fits just above the VR pearl in strength
Let me know what you guys think.  I'm 15.5 mph, rev dominant... pap 3¹/² over, ¹/⁴ down.

Of the 5 you mentioned only the Fringe is decently "weaker" than your hyroad.  The fringe cover is the same family as the hyroad, just the pearl version....same cover that's on the VR Pearl so still fairly strong.

A significant difference would be something like the Tropical Heat Orange/Purple preal...weaker cover and core.

With that low of ball speed on dry, I'd look at either a heat, breeze or natural pearl...

I think you may need to define what type of dry you are experiencing.  If you are having trouble getting the ball to push, are we to assume the shot is playing "short"? (Think Cheetah)  Or does the shot start decent and dry up real quickly like wood lanes typically do? (THS with numerous games)

The type of dry you are experiencing will influence the type of ball and reaction you should look for.  And the difference between the two types of shot make a large difference in ball types.

I would suggest you look at a Tropical Heat. They are actually a little strong on the back end out of the box, however, I put one on a machine with used 4000 abralon, then polished it. This gave me a very controllable ball that easily gets through the fronts, yet makes a nice turn on the back. It's typically my go to ball on burnt wood.

take any average ball on the market and do something either 1-2" from pap or 1-2" from val...i would suggest the first.

Agreed. This and a 5.5-6 pin to pap with a big val angle are my 2 best options on these type conditions.

What about a Roto Scream or Shout? They seem pretty nice for the dry.

Thanks for all of the responses...i really appreciate it.

I bowl on wood lanes that "were supposed" to be replaced 5+ years ago..the resurfacing company literally wont resurface the lanes as of 5 years ago..they said theres nothing left to resurface...every lane is very different from the next lane.  For years i could get away will "balling down" to a mutant cell pearl or an infinite theory as long as i kept them polished and clean.  Layouts with really far pap's arent really needed either (as crazy as that sounds)..

The center is notorious for being the "pin up + pearl" house in the area...its a ths too..believe it or not some solids actually do sometimes work eventhough they burn up..the track area usually will get the ball to the pocket..and not over flip thruogh the nose because its usuing energy early.

But anyways i may be leaning towards a tropical heat now.  The fringe sure has some eye candy shelf appeal though!.  I literally need something that will give me some help to push down lane but have enough strength to cover boards..which was why i kinda was leaning towards a VR pearl..because my crossroad rolls phenomenally, yes im one of the few who likes the updated hyroad.  So its down to those 3.

I did have a lane one bullet at one time and it was too weak, but that was waaaay waaay back then...i still have it though!

My normal bag, being that i like to try all the newer highend stuff looks like this...nano pearl, defiant edge, crossroad, and a polished to hell critical theory.  I feel one of those three will be an excellent "ball down" ball...so i dont have to force shots all night due to the stronger covers.

Also, The og reactor cover on the heat, may be too weak ive thrown a tropical storm, one.of my buddies when it was super dry..and yeah it did get to.the pocket...it didnt have enough umph through the pins...idk it was weird.  Id assume the heat would roll quite a bit better though.

Agreed twice.  I have a rising star, fringe and scream drilled 70* 5 3/8" 70* seperated by surface that I love using on the dry.  below that is my natural pearl.

I have a purple/orange heat and it is surprisingly strong for me but if you don't feel that it will be enough you could also check out a Shatter.  I feel this is pretty good piece for its price and it will clear the heads and still give you the backend you want.

I'll suggest one ball that I think is over looked by many for a light-medium condition when the player has the ability to move inside deeper to catch some head oil and needs enough backend to kick out the back row.  I had been looking for a  ball like this for a number of years and finally found my best match up for this condition which is usually blown up heads and carry down.  The ball is a AMF Bulwhip SE.  Refer to BTM review on the ball earlier this year and I completely agree with their review/opinion.  For me it has the abilities to get in deeper and still not over react and holds pocket very well.  I did take the OOB compound surface to P4000.  This is perfect for hold in the pocket and will fight carry down.   I don't think I have shot anything with the Bullwhip since I started using it on transition and the burn a few weeks ago under 225.  Highly recommend it.
