In bowling jail
« on: October 20, 2015, 06:40:21 PM »
Been a very frustrating start to my season so far. Probably hit the pocket 90% of my shots but not carrying anything. I averaged higher in the 80's with my plastic stuff then I do now. I throw it too straight to move in and when I play out, nothing carries for me. My current arsenal is Crux 1000  Respect OOB  IQ TOUR Polished and Respect Pearl OOB. Looking at either getting a hook monster (Lock) and moving way in or something that goes really straight  (Ride). I hate pounding the pocket night after night and getting crushed. 15.5 mph and a low track. Looking for advice .  Thanks

I run into the same problem you do on house shots quite often.  Part of the problem is our medium speed lower rev deliveries which force us to cover too many boards with a lot of the equipment out there.  Balls like the Ride, or even some of the pure urethanes can offer an option, IF, you can get very direct outside second arrow with them.   The hook monsters like the Lock or Paradox are more iffy and depend a lot on your release even if you are comfortable getting deeper inside.  The fact that you say you have a lower track suggests to me that you may still be hitting up on the ball at release ( like we all did in the 70's ).  That in itself is a carry killer on todays surfaces and oils, because it is very hard to go straight enough, even with tame equipment.

The key to carry isn't more hook, but rather getting you ball to store the revs you do get further down the lane.

Interesting post. I avg 15 mph quibica speed and have no problem carrying with 14lb equipment. The only difference is that I have a very high track. My axis is 6 over and 3/4 up.  My ball speed is plenty enough to carry and throw bird dogs across the lane from time to time.

I would guess that your problem has more to do with entry angle to the pocket than ball speed, or perhaps, the phase that the ball is in when it gets to the pocket.

Solid 8 or 9. Swishing 7 or solid 10.

If you are leaving the entire back row one at a time, you are not hitting the pocket as solid as you might think. This sounds like a consistency of shot issue more than anything else. A good coach would probably work wonders for your game.

First, solid 8, and to some extent solid 9 are totally irrelevant to your carry problems.  The swishing 7's and 10's are more likely to tell the story.  Also, it is much less about entry angle, and more about how much energy is still being released as the ball enters the pocket.  The biggest difference between today and the plastic ball era is that balls often transition from skid to burn out very quickly in the modern environment.  This burn negates any advantage gained from strong entry angle.  I often say that us low rev guys are able to out hook our rev rate, something that was not possible on the old surfaces with plastic balls.

I have to return to my question about your release.  When I hit up on the ball like I did earlier in my bowling career, especially on house shots, the ball either starts up too quick, or over skids then jerks and burns when I hit the break point.

Bob, since I normally agree with most of what you post, please explain your statement. For a right hander, leaving 9 pins usually is a result of entry angle to the pocket. I hinted to the fact that the carry problem could be due to the ball being in the wrong phase when it gets to the pocket, but most of what I see on house shots have more to do with the ball coming in high and hooking past the 9 pin.

I have also seen what looked like solid pocket hits leave I pins. On a lot of 8 pin leaves, the player is playing deeper and the ball rolls out and deflects away from the 8 pin after hitting the pocket and drops off the pin deck going more through the 9 pin instead of splitting the 8/9.

7 pin leaves are often caused again, by entry angle. In this case, the angle being too sharp, coming in behind the head pin and pushing pins in front of the 7. Again, these often seem like solid pocket hits.

My point above was that 15 mph ball speed is not likely the problem regarding carry. No way to tell the culprit unless we see him bowling.

Leaving 8s and 9s can have a lot to do with entry angle.  Too steep and it is a 9, too shallow can leave 8s.  Coming in behind the head pin can leave swisher 7s and ringing 10s.

To me, all of this sounds like too strong a ball.  When one is playing deeper than they should, entry angle will have a wider variation than if they played straighter up along with ball roll variation.  And we all see THS bowlers throwing WAY more ball than they should.

I would challenge the OP to go to a weaker ball and move closer to the dry, just not in the dry.  Keep your ball path straighter down the lane and see if the carry issues can be reduced.

The Ride is weaker, but I would imagine it might be too weak compared to your other stuff.  I would recommend a Wipe Out before a Ride for you.

Good guess. A weaker ball will also  e cleaner up front and should finish stronger in the back as long as he keeps the shot more direct and does not get on too of the dry.

If you still want a Lock -- I have a single drill with 5-6 games on it I am looking to sell -- pm me if interested.

@Metal, tell me about your experience with the Lock?  Why you want to sell?

It is not matching up with the lane conditions I am bowling on. Not enough head oil so the ball is burning up. I will change the cover and add some light polish to see if that helps. If not, I will try to sell it.

I just am not matching up to what I am bowling on so far this season.  Average down almost 20 pins in each league. Been throwing Respect , Respect pearl, Crux, IQ Tour and just can't string any strikes together. In the pocket 90% of the time. Tried everything from moving back on approach to different releases to changing surfaces. Nothing works. Thinking about picked up a Hyroad and a Ride and selling some of the other stuff.  Maybe go IQ Tour (2000)  Hyroad, Respect Pearl and Ride with the Super Natural just in case and for spares.  Never started a season like this before. So frustrated.

If you are down 20 pins using primarily Storm balls and think it's the ball and not you, why wouldn't you drill a ball from another brand to make a more drastic change?
