Storm Demo day COL GA 4/17
« on: April 17, 2010, 07:43:51 AM »
Here is my take on the storm demo day that was held down in columbus this weekend.  I ended up testing every ball that they brought today and while my grading is some what tough I did see two that really impressed me.  I will say to the storm lovers that there is a new ball coming that has a new weight block and cover.  I tested the ball on a couple of the sport patterns and man it was pretty nice.  Nice even transition and decent roll on the backend.

Now for the balls I tested:  Please keep in mind these ball were not drilled to my specs and were what they brought to the demo day.

Tropic Storm:  Good ball for very dry patterns.  HATES OIL

Tropic Heat (Orange/Purple): For the price and performance hands down the best ball they have produced.  Rolls like a virtual gravity, very good on sport shot and house pattern.  (Drilling was straight up with pin above fingers)

Mystery Storm Ball:  Used solely on the sport pattern.  Ball was decent rolled well in the midlane with a decent move to the pocket on the backend.  Was a little disappointed that the ball did not have a strong move or backend like other storm or roto grip balls.

Reign of Fire:  Overall they could have never created this ball.  I know of at least five or six balls out there (Total Bedlam) that beat this ball hands down.  Threw this ball on the Kegel Highway to Hell pattern.  Ball made almost no move in the back end or the front.  House shot the ball had to have very dry outside just to move.  One thing I did notice was the ball had at least 6 inches of flare on when it came back.

Invasion:  Ball is just a dude.  Had to throw the ball slow to get it to react and even still the ball motion was something that was very unappealing.

Mutant Cell:  Decent ball only threw 10 shots and it was average.  Not my favorite of the day

Dark Star:  Great little ball in the demo day.  Loved it on the house pattern and even on one of the sport shots.  I felt myself gravitating to this ball and Tropic Heat the entire day.

Reign:  Okay ball, a bit dated and really not impressive to what I saw earlier in the day.

Overall I have to say that if you are looking for a mid price ball that will surprise you check out the Tropic Heat.  Buddiesproshop has a vid on this great ball and honestly its a ball motion I have not really on any other ball except the Virtual Gravity.

so the invasion didnt move for you, and you werent impressed withthe reign or RoF? Starting to sound like user error.  almost sounds like an anti storm write up .. Other than the" mystery ball"

Nah, just sounds like he didn't have enough oil...hated the RoF, Invasion, and Mutant Cell...Tropical Heat, Tropical Storm, and Dark Star were his best looks...just put 1 and 1 together and its easy to figure out...

agreed with VT, it just sounds like there wasnt enough oil for those stronger pieces and also consider that the balls werent drilled exactly for him as they were Demo balls

well I doubt the lanes were dry.. He actually said they were not.. also stated there were sport shots, which iirc are pretty heavy on oil..  either way  sucks the more aggressive balls didnt work for him

MJ...

Was this intended as an anti storm write up, NO.  I did not like the high end balls simply because the ball motion was not to my liking.  Also even on a house shot the balls, that I did not like, never seemed to roll up regardless of where I played.

Honestly I put my reviews on here simply to document what I believe is an unbiased opinion.  I don't mind what you say but Storm has made alot of balls there were duds over the years.  If you want proof how about looking at posts on this very topic board questioning these high end balls.

Also let me point out not one of storms new balls this year won a tournament.  Most were one by their mid priced line of equipment.  Either it was a Hy road, Natural, mid range ball.  Not once did I see an invasion win a tourney.

My point is that this equipment has its purpose.  But most people/consumers now a days expect a ball to go 45 or 50 feet and do a 45 to 60 degree turn.  Its just the fact of life now.  But this equipment was way to mild and not aggressive enough like I believed.

Just a user's opinion.

all we could get in response to the test ball was that it would fall under the master line.  That was about all.

everyone wants to see the big skid flip because the ball appears to be a monster. invasion is a monster except it is rolly and continuous. JMO

A little different prospective, I was there also. Ralph from Storm-Roto Grip was here about 6 weeks ago for an informal demo and had the ROF and Invasion at that time. So going into this one I really wanted to throw the Hybrid Tropical Heat and the Invasion on the Kegel HTH pattern. The Tropical Heat was pin under and drilled  center of span, which put it at about a 5X4 with my PAP. Ball was a very strong ball on our house shot which is either 38 or 39 feet with it being very dry outside 10. Standing on 29 targeting 15 at the arrows out to about 8 at the break point it had absolutely no problem getting back to the pocket with authority. (I watched the OP throw the Orange/Purple and only wish I could play that kind of line and have the ball look and hit that good). On the Kegel pattern it was much different of course. Standing 26 targeting 15 at arrows trying to keep it at 10 or 11 at the break point it was very playable. Push it outside 10 and not even a wiggle back to the pocket. The Invasion for me on the Kegel pattern was a lot of fun, was able to play a little more left with my feet (about 6 boards) to the same break point and it was strong for me back to the pocket even the push outside of 10 tried to get back. This ball was also drilled center of span but had pin up. With all the negative comments I have seen on the Invasion I was very impressed with what I saw of it. Thanks Storm and Roto for putting this on.

T,

You were throwing that invasion really well on the right side.  I just kind of felt that the ROF and Invasion did not really live up to the hype.  It really seemed like it was another attempt to get the same ball motion like the virtual gravity.  Which I will say is a VERY good ball.

ball motion on the invasion is not even close to virtual gravity. invasion is earlier and more continuous

I really enjoyed the Invasion, the ball was easy to rev and the motion really fit my eye. Pretty much sold me on it for throwing inside, the outside has just become to dry for my ball speed since the weather started warming up. I wonder if anyone on here has the ROF at 4000 Abralon like the Invasion and compared the two with a Virtual all drilled the same. My virtual is drilled with a 5 inch pin to pap (pin under)and the mass bias about 2 inches right of my thumb (and it is very sharp at the break point)while the Invasion was also about 5 inch pin to pap the mass bias was under the thumb. I was really liking the very hard continuous move I saw with that ball.
With all the balls drilled center span pin up or down it really was interesting watching people throw the same ball and to see how different each ball was for that person. It really drives home the point of having the ball set up properly.

Just because it's a sport shot doesn't mean it's heavy oil. In fact, I usually find myself moving deeper inside with my feet on sport shots than I do house shots because there is less volume of oil in the middle of the lane, and less oil in the heads. After just a couple games the shot breaks down in the front and middle part of the lane, and I have to move farther inside chasing the head oil while shelling down to weaker balls.

Based on the results I have personally gotten with some of these balls and the results my friends and teammates have gotten with some of them, I agree with the other posters. You simply did not have enough oil for the way you roll the ball to take advantage of the stronger balls. The Tropic Heat has Reactor coverstock. I am very familiar with this coverstock, and I know that it needs a good bit of friction and needs to see it a lot sooner than the R2S and stronger coverstocks. Meanwhile, my Mutant Cell stays in my basement unless I'm going to a tournament because it's worthless on 90% of oil patterns I see. However, when I get on a fresh shot with a lot of oil, it is a freaking monster.  Also the Reign of Fire is super strong, especially since the out of box finish is 1000 abralon which is really rough and needs a ton of oil to be at all useful.
