My Friction SUCKS.
« on: May 27, 2005, 07:43:00 AM »
I don't know what to do with it.  It has a 3/8ths an ounce too much thumbweight, but I only have 1/8th an ounce of sideweight to work with.  I already drilled the thumbhole as deep as I could without reslugging it.  My bowtie is next to my thumbhole.  It rolls out.  It doesn't just hook set, it flat out rolls out.  It hooks exactly at 40 feet whether I'm playing 4th arrow or 1st, whether I'm playing the oil or the dry.  It's either through the nose or washout.  I've never had so much trouble getting a ball to just hit the pocket, I can't even do that with this ball.  The only area I can play with it is 4th arrow to 10, otherwise it rolls out or hooks too much.  The only problem with that is if I miss a pinch right or am just a tad firm with it, I'm leaving 8-10's and 5-7's.  Don't know what to do with it.  I HATE plugging and redrilling stuff, and I don't want to have to resort to that yet.  I'm debating whether or not to put a weighthole on the LEFT side of the ball (it doesn't flare that much, so I doubt it'll track over the hole) to add some more positive sideweight and get rid of some of the thumbweight.

I guess that would be why it's an overseas release.

Yeah, it was a pro pin.  And yeah, it needs friction, friction to roll out.  I wish I could play straighter with it, but the pattern is too short, and the thing ROLLS OUT.  Hate it.  Hate it hate it hate it.  Don't know what to do with it.  It does hit pretty hard, but only on light or flush hits, half pocket hits leave all kinds of stuff.

I hit mine with some Storm moonshine polish and it gets down the lane with good backend.   Where do you have the RAD placed on this ball?

Whats the surface of the ball? Have you shined it?
Maybe its just not the right ball to match up for what you are bowling on?
Probably has nothing to do with being a pro pin! But could just be to aggressive a layout for the conditions. It doesnt mean the ball sucks!
Its just that you arent matching up with it properly. Happens to everyone.

It's drilled like 4.5x4.5, the RAD and cg are about an inch above and to the right of my thumb.  I did polish it a little.  I've never matched up this bad with a ball before.  It definitely doesn't need more oil because it does nothing in oil.  It definitely doesn't need more dry, because it'll move plenty when it hits it.  It's just all screwed up.  I had to drill the fingers deeper because of sideweight issues, but I had too much thumbweight to begin with, so I had to try to drill the thumb deeper too.  So now I've got 1/8th positive side, and 1 3/8ths thumbweight.  I can't put a weighthole on the right side, because if I drill deep enough to get rid of the thumbweight, I'll end up with negative sideweight.  I don't know WHAT drilling a hole on the left side will do to it, cause I can drill enough weight out to get the thumbweight under an ounce and still keep the positive sideweight under an ounce.  I'd thought about plugging the fingers and redrilling them, but then I might as well plug the whole thing and move the layout.

The static weights are not what is causing the problem.
The major factors to effect ball motion are Surface, Pin placement, MB placement then Static weights. MOre than likely I ma guessing the ball had really high top weight. Which could cause the over under reaction you are describing. The Pro pin balls are designed for extreme layouts for specific conditions. Where putting the cg  and pin in locations where large weight holes can be used to reshape the core to define very strong reactions for specific conditons. You have just chosen a poor layout for your condition/release you are using it on. It happens but generally speaking its not that the ball sucks. I know its very expensive to buy balls.  I also do not sell pro pins unless specifically asked for because of this very reason.

Bowldoc...isn't what you are suggesting illegal? if you put a slug back in the thumbhole and "cover" up the ghose hole, you have created a void in the ball which is illegal from what I understand.

Am I correct here?

I'm guessing a lack of Tilt here is causing you to burn up the ball early.

BTW, it's called the X-Factor FRICTION and it comes out of the box dull.  What did you expect it to do?  People kill me buying hook monsters and particle balls then saying "I want it to go long with alot of backend"

Oh, I know, I wanted it to hook.  I've got a Super Charge I wanted to hook, and it does hook, but it doesn't roll out.  I can't use it because it hooks too much, but it really turns over and moves when it starts hooking.  I might have to just plug and redrill the Friction.  Don't want to, but oh well.  It does look like a pretty terrible layout, it wasn't what I had in mind when I laid it out.  Yeah, I did all the measurements so I knew where the holes were going to be, it just didn't look the way I wanted it to when I was done.  Oh well, live and learn I guess.

By the way, I'm still learning all the niche tricks to drilling, but I'm not quite that inept.  I knew it was going to hook, and hook early, I just expected it to move in the right direction at the backend.  I know better than that.

No drilling can overcome Surface and Core.

And things get real touchy when you're dealing with x-outs

Thanks for the suggestion, buuuut . .  I actually already thought of that, but my track is so high that it already comes VERY close to tracking over my thumb, and does a little bit if the ball catches on my thumb.  I'd be tracking right over it for sure.  I think I'm just gonna redrill it.
