Looked at a few balls in an x-ray, and was surprised...
« on: February 28, 2019, 09:59:29 PM »
I just got back from the airport, and 5 balls from my arsenal went through the x-ray machine: IQ Tour Nano, Tropical, Hy-Road Pearl, 100P, and a Street Fight. All of the cores showed up, and looked exactly like they do in illustrations/renderings, except one: the Street Fight. The core shape was nothing at all like what Storm shows it to be. In fact, it actually looked exactly like the Camber core of the Tropical.

Any guesses?

If I were to hazard a guess, it would be size and shape distortion. In diagnostic x Ray, the oriention of a body part can cause it to appear different on an x Ray due to elongation and foreshortening. With it being a two dimensional image, it is impossible to determine depth of anything. This could easily cause the core to appear a different shape than it actually is. Plus, depending on the core density and the penetration power of the x rays, it may appear as one large mass instead of something more intricate.

(Ps, I work in x Ray and cat scan) lol

Good feedback. But, it looked like I could see "depth" and 3-dimensionality with the other cores. The shape of the Street Fight's core is pretty distinct: it's like a huge cross. But in the x-ray scan, it was just a small light bulb shape, just like the Tropical.

Looks like what you saw was the inner core.

^^This. The densest piece in a bowling ball is the actual weight block. Most manufacturers wrap a less dense core material around that, typically in the shape of a sphere a little smaller then the ball. Then they pour the coverstock around that. Storm, on some balls, shapes that filler material around a smaller weight block and markets it as a huge "weight block" and says the ball has no core. So what you're seeing is the small dense weight block in the middle of the less dense "weight block" (core material).
