Explain A Drilling On A Shift
« on: January 18, 2009, 08:31:40 AM »
I currently have a Storm Shift with the following drilling, and I am not sure on how this ball will react.  The ball is in OOB Surface.

UPDATE: I am right handed...
My PAP is 3.5 over, 1/2 up...

looks to me like that drilling will cause the ball to roll early and smooth.

Thanks-
I had it drilled once, and the ball didn't really respond to any lane condition I was on.  I played multiple ways and angles and it just didn't work.  I got it re drilled, and well now I think I need new grips but ya.

Thanks Alot!

Okay, thanks a lot.  I have been wondering since I got it re-drilled.  Thanks a lot.

Don't listen to him.  If that is your true PAP at 3 1/2" right and 1/2" up that a low track player's high-flare layout that promotes an early/smooth and continuous motion if you're in longer/heavier volume.  If the pattern is too short or not enough volume with a ball as strong as a Shift and a drilling as strong as that for a low track player, you will see the ball "flare out" and not give you much motion in the backend.  In that case you want to shell down to a weaker ball and save the Shift for longer/higher volumes of oil.

That's exactly what I had to do tonight...though I held onto it.  The lanes really go burned by the third game...But it is early and smooth.  By game three it cut if I slowed down or hit it.

Thanks a lot guys!

My bad!  I looked at the picture of the drilling and not your specs!!  So didn't see that you were only 3.5 over, meaning that pin is in an early rolling position.  Angle of drilling still is to weaken movement in back-end but with 3.5 PAP that is going to move early.
Great catch DP3 and my apologies for not being more attentive jkoo9.
Was thinking more a typical 5 to 5.5 PAP like I have.

(Deleted my original post to eliminate possible confusion.)

Thanks alot riggs.  It's okay.  I had to modify my post before you replied.  I didn't post my PAP and I know that isn't going to go very far with the PAP being a requirement to drill and explain drillings.

And yes, I do have a lower track since I don't really get around the ball.  When I was watched, I had a RPM of around 250ish at around 17 MPH.

Not to pile on, but you get around the ball a ton or you would have a higher track/higher PAP measurement. You should be in the spinner category for that kind of track. This is not a negative as you should be able to get length when other guys are getting early burn, you should also be a natural at playing deep as your ball roll should delay roll on the scorch.

I do not get around the ball and track very close to the fingers and thumb. My PAP is 5 1/8 > 5/8 up.

Thanks a lot.  I really don't get a lot of hand in the ball...I am also not a big angle player.  I have a harder time playing the swing.  More than twenty boards of separation and I loose some accuracy.  It's something I am working on

Big Mike, so by right-I should have a higher axis, right?

Not always. Getting around it and getting a strong wrist turn are 2 different things. One of my best buddies throws a spinner track but has a rev rate in the 250-265 range. When he goes inside or on long patterns, ping-ola or wash outs. Now if he had that ball track and a 400 RPM rev rate, KAPOW!!

You may have your thumb down at the release point, which can cause the track to go that far out. There may be some timing issures putting you in that position at that release.

It sounds like you are a good candidate to get on video and contact Jeff Carter or go see someone locally with some video experience.

Remember, the camera it don't lie.

The interesting thing is that my PAP has NOT been messured in a long time nor have I messured it on my own.  The long time is equal to a time frame of greater than a year.  Within this time I have become more consistant and my timing has gotten better.  I probably could use a vid to see what my RPM is at, and maybe take a look at my PAP as well.  My speed seems to fit best at about 17mphs [Bowling alley tracked].  Other than that, I probably should tape and review.

Thanks alot everyone!
