I was just wondering if there is enough difference between these two to have them both in a 6-7ball arsenal.

Plenty of difference. I keep both in my bag - Double Agent is one of the earliest rolling balls I have ever seen with an incredibly smooth move to the pocket. Special is also a relatively smooth ball - but it gets into its roll a couple of feet later than the Double and when it hits the dry its move is much stronger. Both are medium-heavy oil balls but are really for different conditions. I use the Double for longer patterns or conditions with a nasty wet-dry spot. I use the Special for more typical heavier house shots where I can open up the lanes a bit more.

Much has been said about the Special on this board but for me the Double is a better ball because of the added control it gives me.

hmm, I was thinking I could use the double for heavy oil, but I see in your profile that you use the epic battle. Is the epic really better suited to it, or do you have a 'better' layout for it?

It really depends on your definition of heavy oil. The Double Agent is my favorite ball for tricky medium-heavy shots, but on a rare occation (some PBA Regional shots, occational tournaments with very heavy oil, etc.) it doesn't meet my need so I got a Battle for that extreme shot. I'd argue that 90% of what people call heavy oil the Double Agent is an excellent ball for that shot.

All that ranting said, I would not use oil volume as the differenciator for the Double and the Special. If you are really looking a real step up from the Special Agent as far as handling oil I'd go with the Battle or a Passion.

The double agent is a fair bit newer than the EB though isn't it? Also looking at the core, I think I will be better off with an agent or other symmetric cored ball.

I have really liked:

ebo savage pearl
track crunch time
track code red critical mass
track silencer
storm trauma ER
storm el nino 2000
amf nighthawk menace
amf bullwhip
amf whip pearl

They all have 'simple' cores I think they are all symmetric too, apart from the menace (which looks symmetric apart from a torque ring).

I've had mixed success with phenom unleashed which is strongly assym, and absolutely hate my tpc player which is also asymm.

Add all that in with the fact that the EB is asymmetric and roto is quite hard to get here, I think other options are better for me.

OK, so if you want to carry both and you want the Double to be stronger in oil drill the Special 5" from PAP and drill the Double 4" x 4". That should do the job.
