More aggressive ball to compliment my Hyroad?
« on: February 16, 2015, 10:31:52 PM »
New to the forum so thanks in advance for the help.  I am a stroker with around a 175 average, and I am new to the league scene.  I have always bowled as much as possible, but my former job didn't allow me the time to dedicate to a league.  I have gotten back into the game heavily now, and started my Storm arsenal with a Hyroad, figuring I couldn't go wrong with an iconic ball/hybrid cover stock to start.  That said I am ready to take the next step and go a little more aggressive.  What do you guys think?  I bowl right at 15 mph, stand on 17 and throw to the 10th board, typically.  I am VERY indecisive on this next ball purchase and I would love to hear what you all have to say.  I know only that I am certain I want to stick with Storm/Rotogrip because I believe in their product and I fell comfortable there.  I look forward to hearing your opinions, and I will listen to all who want to help.  Thanks again!
Starting Lineup [Haywire; Unhinged; Hectic; Pitch Blue]

Everyone is going to say Iq nano. That's the newest "great" ball out there. But in my opinion if you want a nice step up, the Roto Grip Disturbed is a great ball

Welcome aboard first and foremost.

The Hy-Road is one of my favorite benchmark balls that I've used.  Even though I have replaced mine in the past year, it still is one of the best balls for that on the market.  That says a lot since it's been on the market for 6 years now.

If you stay with Storm/Roto Grip, I could see you going with either an IQ Tour Solid, or possibly a Fusion.  Both of those will handle heavier volumes while still being fairly similar in overall motion.  The Fusion would basically be a stronger version of the Hy-Road that you already have (still uses a hybrid cover).

One brand I could also see you looking at is Motiv.  I throw a mixed Motiv/Storm/Roto Grip arsenal currently and Motiv is really putting out great equipment.  If you were to check out that brand, the Covert Revolt or Revolt Vengeance would get my vote for being a step above the Hy-Road.  The Covert Revolt has a solid cover, is very smooth throughout the lane and will let you play in heavier oil.  The Vengeance is a hybrid but will give you a little more length and more backend.

Any of these options would work out well.  It will just depend with a stronger ball if you want something smoother or something that gives more length and backend.

MOTIV Trident Odyssey
MOTIV Forge Fire

Medium-Light
MOTIV Venom Shock
MOTIV Tribal Fire

I've heard that the Hy-Road Solid is stronger overall, but it has a more niche use. I've seen some people use it to some success. The Crux looks like a beast as well and I haven't seen anyone with a really bad reaction to it. Seems versatile and can handle heavier conditions. Storm also has Roto Grip and 900 Global under their umbrella so you may want to look into their equipment as well.

I just saw Jason Belmonte win with a sanded HyRoad after switching off of a polished HyRoad.

What a difference in reaction.

As to IQ tours, I just don't get it!  I don't see the strength.  I see because of the low flare the ability to play more direct.  Less midlane!  Flare of Fusion and other IQ's at 15 0.029.  Flare of the HyRoads near 0.048.

I have thrown a HyRoad solid in demo.  Nice!  I have thrown a Hysteria in demo nice but longer.  I have thrown a Crux in Demo.  Strongest of the 3.  I agree I have seen no one with a bad reaction with the Crux!

Crux.  It is strong and reads the mid-lane very consistently.  I agree on not seeing anyone experiencing a bad reaction with it.

Ok.  A buddy of mine with the same span has a Defiant Soul he is letting me try.  I am going to throw it tomorrow.  It looks pretty chewed up, and aesthetics are pretty huge for me so I am very leery of buying unless the price is too good to pass up.  I will let you guys know how it works out.  Until then, what current ball do you think is comparable to the DS?  Thoughts?

I'm surprised the Crux has not gotten as much love on these boards as it should,Great ball!
The harder I try the harder they fall

I too would suggest the Crux. I have my Fusion under my hy-road and with my spare ball, I have most conditions covered. Crux for heavy, Hy-road for medium and a highly polished fusion for light.

Well...after talking with a few friends and throwing a few other balls...I settled on the IQ Nano.  I love the strength early and mid-lane, and having it drilled very aggressively it absolutely crushes on the back end.  Thanks for all the tips and opinions guys.  I have my first lesson Sunday and my coach and I plan on talking about equipment and what direction to go next.  Thanks again!
