Title: Med-heavy symmetrical core?
Post by: dougb on February 11, 2009, 08:06:26 AM: Thinking about selling my Gravity Shift and picking up another Storm ball for medium to heavy oil. I seem to find symetrical cores easier to control, as I throw medium speed/revs and play it fairly straight up the 10 board.

I love my T-Road Pearl, so my first choice is the Hy-Road. But I'm interested in the Second Dimension, as it seems better able to handle the carrydown.

I also wonder about the Rapid Fire Solid and Spitfire.

I never see enough oil for the T-Road Solid or the Virtual Gravity.

Any advice is appreciated.

Post by: Bigmike on February 12, 2009, 09:15:02 AM: Have you ever tried the Dimension? It is symetrical and not as sharp off the spot as the Virtual. I have also been able to make some good surface changes on the Dimension and change the look slightly.

would hurt to get a lil left and swing the ball a lil... the t-road and VG would like that! LOL

The most overlooked and underrated Storm ball for what you are looking for is the Rapid Fire (solid). It is probably the only true 'benchmark' ball in the Storm line and it rolls very nice when you are playing in a fresh oil house shot relatively straight up the boards. HY-Road will kind of fill that bill as well, but it's move off the dry is similar to the T-Road Pearl. I drilled a Rapid Fire for one of our house bowlers over the summer to replace his Lane #1 Dirty Bomb. After altering the surface for him (it worked better for him at 4000 abralon) his average went up 15 pins year on year.

My pro shop was trying to convince me for the way I play to go with a Track Rising SE, which also goes long. I know that's for another board--and I'm a big fan of Storm equipment--but I'm going to ask him if he thinks the RF or Rising SE would be a better match for me.

I haven't drilled any Rising SEs but from what I've seen they are fairly good balls. The problem is that it is basically the Track equivalent of the Gravity Shift, which you said you weren't matching up well with. And it is asymmetric.

I am not your pro shop guy, so I will bow to their understanding of your game. However, for someone playing down and in on a fresh house shot the best bet is a symmetric solid that matches your speed and rev. rate. If you want to go with Track I'd look at the Temper - same class and similar reaction to the Rapid Fire. The Temper is also asymmetric but just barely.
