My drilling on a Virtual Energy
« on: November 29, 2009, 11:48:48 PM »
After spending a good while getting to know the dual angle and more about ball layouts I've decided on the following for me VE.

Dual angle: 45 deg x 5.75" x 40 deg

5.75" x 3.5" x 3" Pin Buffer

PAP is 5 3/4" by 1/2" inch

I'm going for lots length and backend snap with this one

I have matched speed and revs at about 350 with a high track.

What do you guys think?

From my experience and Mo's charts, that would be a hook and set layout. To get a sharp breakpoint, you need the mass bias at about 5" and the pin at your 5 3/4". This would put your drilling angle at 70*. 45* is between a forward roll and hook and set drilling. You could also decrease your pin buffer a little. I would go 30* or around 1 1/2' to 2". This would give you the quick transition you are looking for. I definitely would go with 70* drilling angle if you don't want it to roll early. Being a bit of a high tracker, you could keep the 40* val angle to be flare safe, but you definitely need a longer pap to mass bias distance or you will end up with a lot of midlane read instead of backend.

I don't understand where I'm going wrong with my understanding of layouts?

Go to https://www.buddiesproshop.com/36/Asymetrical_Layout_Guide.htm This chart is gold! I use it to layout all my asymmetrical balls and it works beatifully! Use it to get the reaction you are looking for. Hope this helps!

So a big thing that I take from this is that because I'm a high track player, I cannot really deviate from MB positions 1 or 2 on any layout.

I recently obtained a prosect and discovered where my PAP was.  I'm tired of generic drillings from dudes in the pro shop.  I want to start pushing my layouts and get what I'm looking for out of my gear.

Thanks for this link. It is helpful and I'll add it to the other documents I've been collecting.

I've been working on an all inclusive excel document to get all this stuff down.

So this is what I have come up with.

70 deg x 5.75" x 30 deg
5.75" x 5.5" x 2 1/4" Pin Buffer

This puts the pin about 1.5" right above my bridge and MB right right about the 1 o'clock edge of thumbhole.  Probably gonna go through the key a bit.

I'm looking for this thing to have good length on dryer lanes, second shift and late night bowling.

Ball needs to go long, turn hard and look like someone just kicked it into the pocket.

Sounds like a better layout. Just remember though, the backend is more a function of the bowler''s release than the layout! If you don''t have high rotation of axis and decent rpm''s, you''re never going to get that "kicked left" look. The surface you put on it will have a big influence also.

If you want a ball for second shift conditions, and still want the ball to kick, You may want to look into a Reign. This is what the Reign was designed for. The Virtual Energy has a very strong core, and wants to roll early, but the polished box finish allows it moderate length. The Reign has a pearl cover, and a higher RG, less diff weight block, and is designed to open up the backend of the lane. The Virtual Energy will give you the best reaction on fresher medium, medium-oily conditions that has oil up front, and clean to moderate carrydown lane conditions.

Well, maybe I shouldn't have used the term "dry".  These are subjective terms after all.

I think I've settled on a 65* x 5 x 30*

Should compliment what I also have in the bag.

Anyone got any more tips?
