need a new ball. Advice?
« on: January 26, 2011, 08:31:40 AM »
My beloved Storm Shift is done :(
Threw a lot of good games with it, even a few 300's

I'm looking for advice on a new ball. I only bowl on 1 league a week. Usually medium oil. Carrying a 205 average. I guess you'd consider me a tweener with medium to fast ball speed.

I got a Reign of Fire drilled out last year and it's been sitting in my bag because I can't control it. Hooks too early for me.  I can't stand having to stand all the way left or having to go through the middle of the lane.  I liked the smooth arc and consistent roll I got with my Shift.  Don't necessarily want a lot of snap.

Can anyone recommend a ball with similar properties to the Shift?

you could try to polish a prodigy

particle like the shift and both r2x cover if i remember right

or even a victory road with more of a arc drilling

both fit under rof

get a Reign Supreme and drill it strong

The only things that are truly permanent are death and Sharpies.

I believe when you lower your expectations, you only increase your chances xD

instead of buying a new ball, IMO, it would make a lot more sense to take the reign of fire that you ALREADY own to your pro shop and have them adjust the surface and add some polish. work with the equipment that you have, the rof is a very good ball, DON'T be afraid to tweek the coverstock to get the reaction that you're looking for. you may have to adjust it maybe twice, but $10/$20 is alot cheaper than buying another ball (and your reign of fire will still be sitting in the closet, useless) just my opinion, ken

One idea would be to get the anarchy and put the same layout on it. From there you can tweek the surface until you see a similar ball motion to your shift.  The two balls are very similar in cover core characterisics

Ok i will give a logical point since everyone is just suggesting a new ball. Did you try adjusting the surface on the ROF? 1000 abralon is the oob, if you took it to say 4000 or 2000 polished, it might give you more length and a smoother response to friction like you saw from the Shift....

The problem with socialism is, you eventually run out of other people's money too...

my point exactly!!! WHY would you want to pay for ANOTHER ball PLUS DRILLING when you haven't given the ball that you ALREADY own a chance to work?????

I'm with those guys who suggest to adjust the surface on the ROF...I had the old Track Rising which I found to be too strong for my liking. For a while, I'd stop buying new balls and put the Rising on the spinner. I slapped on some Bean Sauce and it was perfect. Give a surface adjustment a try, it might take several times on the spinner before you find the reaction you're looking for, but it'll save you some $$.....

There is no surface adjustment that you can do to replicate the roll of a  shift with a reign of fire.  Bowling balls are tools.  He has a great tool for medium to heavy oil with the reign of fire.  Now he liked his shift a strong low RG fast reving asymmetric pearl.  That's the complete other end of the spectrum.  ROF even with weaker surface adjustments will end up being to strong through the front even with polish due to its solid cover characteristics.  Whereas now he had his shift which gave clean glide through the front and a controlled reaction without sacrificing hitting power.  He is looking to replace his shift.  I'm not saying he needs to buy a ball, but he had a great 2 ball arsenal and I think the anarchy will really compliment that reign of fire.

Ps sorry about last post the RG of the shift is 2.55 at 15 pounds.  I mistaked the ball for gravity shift which I believe is 2.48.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Even though he's an hour away now I went in to visit my old pro shop. He was of the agreement that because of the differences in characteristics of the ROF there's no way I can duplicate the action of the shift. In fact, he was kind of surprised the other guy recommended this ball for me in the first place.  That being said, I had him polish it up for me to give it a try.  If that doesn't work I'm just gonna sell the ROF and put the $$ towards the right ball.  I've only made it through a couple practice games and a few warmup balls here and there, so it beats having a $200 paperweight.

I don't necessarily need a stronger ball in my arsenal because of the house shot I normally bowl on. Just looking for something that's gonna give me some range on the lane and some carry.

I took a roto grip Cell and through drilling and surface adjustment made it a step down ball from the Cell Pearl. You can do just about anything with a ball. Remember surface makes up most of the reaction shape. If you use a polish with a slip agent you can get a solid to act like a pearl. I'm not saying he will get the reaction he is looking for but it is possible.

Sorry but still reign of fire will not end up like even with slip agent polishes such as extender.  If you add the slip to the ball you might sacrifice back end reaction. Not to mention i found that the reign of fire was a ball that wasnt too friendly with coverstock alterations.  Depending on the lay out of the ball then maybe you can achieve your desired reaction but as for core, cover, and overall ball motion the ROF is far From the shift.  Im sure he can get it to work on any house shot with alteration, yes.  As for getting the same motion as a shift i doubt it.

To me it sounds like a little surface change is really all this guy needs.  I mean he only bowls once a week.  Not like he needs a specific reaction for many different tournament shots.  He can't control the ROF out of box.  Easiest fix, change the surface.  Pretty simple.

Like i said, im sure he can get the ball to work just fine.  however he said he was looking to replace the ball.  So I just did what he asked and suggested a ball thats pretty close.  Anything can work on a house shot with the right surface and lay out.  How ever mimicking a ball motion exactly is hard to do when the balls of two extremes.
