Rebuilding Time
« on: February 07, 2010, 02:36:40 AM »
I am posting this in the STORM board b/c of the incredible pieces coming out of UTAH recently.  I have been buying balls at random and have a mish-mash of equipment, and nothing I REALLY enjoy.  I am looking for two new ones (no innuendo's please!)  I will post what i am currently carrying and would like some advice from those who have had a good experience with the storm and roto equip.

Virtual Gravity (500 grit abralon);  This is my 2nd virtual, it's pretty fresh but I am looking for something a bit earlier and a touch stronger.

Nomad Solid (box condition);  this is my goto ball on thurs night league.  it handles a fair amount of oil without being too squirt-y.  This is prob my so-called benchmark ball.

2nd Dimension (500 abralon with a light coat of magic cut polish);  I'm having trouble getting this ball to hook.  I resurfaced it, sweated some oil out and it's just not the same.  This one will probably be the first to leave the bag.  I'm welcoming some surface prep tips on this one.

Ebonite Pin Slasher (1000 grit abralon);  Best ball i've thrown in at least 5 years but it's pretty beat up.  I would like something to replace this as my heavy oil benchmark.  Reign of fire possibly?

Hammer Black Widow (1000 grit abralon);  yep, i still carry this.  it's still great and will prob continue to carry this.

NOW, before all you start saying i need something less, I have it in the bag at home for when i travel.  This is just my league line up.  I bowl two first shift leagues and one of them puts out the flood.  The other one puts out a good amount of oil but i can still get in and cover some boards (hence the polished nomad).

Start with the Invasion to replace the VG, smooth the surface of the VG so it will fit under the Invasion.

Drew,

I had my best look with the 2nd Dimension when I hit it with 2000, then put a used 4000 on it by hand. After I did this, it was like a brand new piece and really worked well when I needed to keep the ball in play.

The Reign-of-Fire seems to be early like the Dimension. Maybe a pin under lay out with a hole down the VAL. The Invasion seesm to be longer and stronger in the back. I only say this because I had just drilled a Mutant Cell right when I got the e-mail about the Invasion and ROF and have them sitting at home blank right now.

so cut it heavy with 360, smooth with 500 then smooth again with 2k?  or did you work through all the grits?

How do you like that Mutant versus the VG?  is it stronger?  earlier?  The ROF would be good for replacing my pin slasher sounds like..

I did the 360/500/2000, then hand sand with used 4000 and litely. I am finding that used 4000 with pressure will put a shine like polish without the hard change of direction. Great for pushing the fronts and letting the back ends smoothly redirect the ball. This was a Brian Himmler suggestion at the Sequoia TQR last year.

The Mutant is very strong. I was having a hard time getting the fingers to feel correct. They felt too loose which made it feel like I was loosing it at the end of the swing. I changed them out again last night and think they will be tight enough from here on, so I can compare notes with you at a later date on this one. I know out of box, it appears to be very strong. Bill Ludwig had to shine his as it was burning way too early for league conditions around here. Bill went on a honor score spree with it shortly after the surface changes.

For the Storm fans, the Reign of Fire looks like a winner.

Alright, I'll give it a shot.  I just wish I could get back that mica feeling.  My 2nd used to be such a great ball and incredibly strong through the midlanes.

let me know how you like it. are you hitting any longer patterns soon?  im interested to know how it recovers.  I'm tired of having to take my virtuals to 500 to get some recovery.
