So after much debate, I put holes in a Hyroad Solid.  Wasn't ever on the list until recently when I decided what reaction shape I really needed.  I don't like the box surface on this ball which was what initially kept it out of the conversation, but I wanted a smooth-ish solid with some pop on the backend that I could square up and be firmer with.  Went 65x5.25x40 and put a light coat of polish on it.  Really pretty happy, it's good good length and a strong but controllable backend move, and is very continuous.  It can get a little squirty if you get too firm or play too much oil, but that's any ball, and there were a couple times it still pulled up and hit when I thought I'd flagged the shot.  I'll try it tonight at the other house, but despite the odd choice to go so aggressive with the factory surface, I see this as one of those must have balls that you could nearly create a full arsenal out of with a few different layouts and surface combinations. 

I needed a benchmark ball that wouldn't chew up the shot.  I have a Covert Revolt and I didn't want to have any overlap with that.  I'd have drilled another one of those weaker and polished it, but I wanted more pop on the back and that core is awfully strong.  I hadn't wanted this one at first because I just don't like the idea of picking a ball and then changing everything about it.  I figure they designed the ball that way for a reason, so taking an Octane or something and then drilling it to be smooth and adding some surface doesn't make any sense to me . . just drill a smooth ball that has some surface in the first place.  That layout is one of my favorites, and I really didn't have to put much polish on it at all and it ended up really good.
