Storm guys need input
« on: June 23, 2009, 06:04:50 AM »
Im going down to 14lbs due to bowling balls being too strong nowadays and I am thinking of a 4 ball arsenal that can get me through anything.  rev rate 530-225 depending on condition.  tilt 75 degrees.

Heavy oil Troad solid 4x2 or a Demension 4x2
Medium Hyroad 3x2
medium Hyroad 5x5
light Natural 3x5

I tend to match up better to sym cores but I know for a fact that the virtual gravity is just too much ball and i still have not seen enough oil for it.

I am actually in the middle of doing the same thing as you are.  I just recently bought two 14lb balls.  I have a Rogue Cell and a Virtual Gravity.  And, I have a Virtual Energy on order.

I agree with you about the VG.  It is a very strong ball.  You need a lot of head oil to get good use out of the VG, and I have yet to meet a pair of lanes that can really hold up to it.  However, I can say that the Rogue Cell has helped me more on a variety of conditions than any other ball that I have in my arsenal.  The cover/core combination is just right.  When the VG was hooking too much or too little, the Rogue Cell would play the same lines and get right to the pocket.  The hybrid cover allows you to forget about the heads and concentrate more on your breakpoint.  I would suggest that you consider adding one to your new arsenal.  Especially if you are not particularly tied to just Storm.

I am passing on the Hyroad because I want to try the new Virtual Energy.  As for the Energy, I am hoping that the ball will provide me the length that the VG does not, yet provide the same strong backend.  The Energy has a hybrid cover as well, but it will be more pearlized than solid, unlike the Rogue.  From the early reports, it looks to be just as strong as the HyRoads, too.

As for drier lanes, I will be taking a hard look at the new Storm Fast.  For me, The Natural didn't make my short list because of the cover.  It is a urethane ball and I personally do not care to go back to that era of bowling.  "Been there, done that" comes to mind.    I believe the oils and lane conditions of today are much more "slick" than back when urethane balls were heavily used.  The Natural will provide a much less aggressive move to the pocket no matter how strong you get the ball drilled.  For me, it would just become my spare ball.    However, if your rev rate is consistently around 530 like you stated, then you should have no problem with getting a good reaction from the Natural.  The ball should fit in your arsenal just fine.

Your arsenal looks good, but I certainly would consider adding a ball like the Rogue Cell to it instead of going with two HyRoads.  As you know, sometimes it's not about how the ball is drilled, but how well you match up to the lanes with the right cover or surface that counts the most.

Good luck!

I would agree with a lot of what DCNetBoy said, but I wonder what types of lanes you bowl on before making the decision about the natural and the Rouge Cell.  If the lanes aren't oily enough for a VG then they might break down enough for the natural.  I know that it is old school tech, but that might be needed if they get toasty, that is why a few companies have brought it back in the past few years.  And the R2S can be pretty aggressive even in a pearl

Also, how comparable is the Rouge to a Demension of a T-Road Solid.  I realize it should be a bit flippier, but from what I have seen it moves a lot and would be a step above the HyRoads.  It might be advantageous for him to go

Rouge Cell
Hyroad
Hyroad
Natural or Fast depending on how toasty they get.

Or perhaps a Cell and then the Hyroads if he really wants a smooth move off the dry.

My two cents for what its worth.

With only 4 balls, I dont think you should have any duplicates.  I would go with the following:

Cell or Dimension
Virtual Energy or 2nd or Nomad Pearl
HyRoad
Fast

Drill them according to the volume and patterns you bowl on, though it is tough to get 4 balls to cover everything.  Also, if you do have a 530 rev rate, I would keep the pins at 5+ inches.  With that high of a rev rate, the shorter pin layouts may burn up too early.

If you really dont like assymetrical, you could replace the Cell with the Dimension and replace the VE with the 2nd or the Nomad Pearl.

My experience has been the same with the VG. Once the head oil breaks down, I go to the HyRoad, polished 2000 abralon, and have had good success. I still wonder how the VG would do polished, probably the same as the HyRoad with me losing the good look that it gives on the fresh shot.

It seems like you are playing the Rogue behind your VG and getting good results. How do you expect that the Rogue will compare with the VE? Do you think there will be enough difference in the Rogue and the VE to justify having both?

Also, would you compare the Rogue to the HyRoad?

I am curious as I am debating whether to order a VE, or maybe try a Rogue Cell as my next ball. I did not like the Cell Pearl. Never could find the right cover to match up with it. For that reason, I am leaning towards the VE, drilled just like my VG, and hoping that I can use it once the head oil breaks down.

CCRider,

I'm not trying to highjack this thread by talking about the Rogue Cell, but I only made the suggestion because it's cover is very versatile.  I personally like to leave most of my stuff in OOB condition, but I have tried the Rogue at 4000 with a hand polish.  I personally thought it was fine, but I prefer the ball at it's box condition.  No, the Rogue will not out hook the VG, but I would argue that the backend is just as strong.

With the Energy, I can only speculate because I do not have it yet.  However, as you may know, the ball is polished at 1500 grit OOB.  The Rogue is at a 4000 matte finish OOB.  I will go out on a limb here and say that the Energy will probably get the down the lane a few feet more than the Rogue.  LOL!

I am hoping that the "pearlized-hybrid" cover on the Energy will be long and strong, but without the over-under reaction that we see from a lot of strong pearls.  Case in point, my best buddy has a Cell Pearl.  Man, he can really make it do wonders on the lane.  However, it is one of the worst offenders of over-under that I have seen.  Don't be fooled by it's pearlized cover.  That ball needs oil!  LOL!

The Energy or the Hy-Road appears to be a little more smoother off the spot.  The Rogue is very smooth off the spot.  The Cell Pearl can be pretty violent off of the spot.  Some people like that and some people don't.  I personally find it hard to control.  Oskuposer, may or may not agree.  But I do think he will benefit from having an arsenal that has more choices in coverstocks as opposed to a limited few.

As for justifying the purchase of a VE while owning a Rogue...  Hell, I wish that could add a two more!  LOL!  I still need to replace two more 15lb balls after the VE arrives.  However, I think that I will wait until later in the year to see what else comes out.

Good luck!
