Pin Placement 4.5-5
« on: March 16, 2005, 03:24:27 PM »
I have a triple X which has pin placement 4.5-5. How does that affect the ball in terms of hook and revolution rate?

Depending on how it is drilled the ball will most likely go longer before making it's turn.  I am not a fan of long pin out balls as they usually roll up late.

Thanks for the info. I have mine drilled that the pin is about 2in above the fingers with cg kicked out to the right of my palm about 1.5in. I haven't tried to ball yet. From what u said, this ball won't perform well on the oil lane since it rolls up late? But I am slow bowler (15mph), so does that give the ball more time to roll up?? I will try this new ball someday next week.

These types of pin placements also react quicker and more dramatically to the dry portion of the lane resulting in a sharper break point which may be hard to control. Don't be afraid to scuff or dull the surface to help it read earlier and mellow the violent snap on the backends.

I second what Bill Ray said.  The longest pin ball I own is my XXXtreme at just around 4.  It was going longer than I wanted so I hit it with scotch brite and it helped the ball read the lanes earlier.

The one thing I would question is what your goal was with the Triple X in the first place?  Some people like the ball to go longer with a sharp break at the end.  Don't scuff it if that is what you are looking for.  If you are looking for a smoother overall ball reaction by all means dull it down some.

Good Luck

I got this ball because I want a ball that hooks on the oily lane. I talked to my local pro shop and he said this is the ball you want to skid and snap. He drilled that the pin is right between the fingers and 2 in above with the cg kicks out to the right about 1.5in and rad is in the strong position. I tried it on the medium oil. It goes long and then SNAP. Never had such ball but it was kind amazing. My old ball was drilled to have smooth arc so I am not usd to it yet. I tried it again tonight on a dry lane (because it was late and they didnt oil the lane again). However, it didnt skid at all and started readin the lane pretty early. Didn't have much backend either maybe it already burned out all the energy by the time when it rolled down. So I put it away. I thought it would go long on the dry lane as well, maybe not as long as on the oily lane, but it just doesn't skid at all. Haven't tried on a heavy oil lane yet. But I think it definitely needs some oil in order for it to skid and snap.

Another ques, what cleaner would you recommand to clean this triple x?? Thanks for all the replies.

Chvti,

It sounds like you have almost come to the same conclusion I have about the XXX Factor; it's a great medium oil ball with lots of snap in the backend.  It's not necessarily a great heavy oil ball unless you have lots of revs.  It's OK on medium-dry but as they start to dry up it's time to put that ball away.

Greenfam,

Have you tried this ball on heavy oil lane? Does it go too long before it snaps?? How would you adjust on the heavy oil lane? Do you throw slower? Thanks!

At a certain volume of oil (somewhere between med.-heavy to heavy) the XXX Factor just slides out too much for me.  I assume if you have high revs. that may help but I am more in the low to medium rev. bowler.  I can't get the XXX Factor to return enough for me in heavy oil.

I bought the Triple Extreme that fits the bill for heavy oil.  It may be overkill but it worked for me.

Tried the ball again tonight on medium-light lane and it hooked too early. I dont have the power to throw it fast enough so it can skid. I think it definitely needs more than medium oil in order to make it skid and snap (at least for me). It skids really far but still comes back with no problem. I dont bowl on a league, therefore, it's lucky if i could get an oily lane to see this happen.

Tried the ball again tonight 3/22. It was medium oil lane. I don't know what was wrong but the ball didn't really skid. How should I adjust? I tried to throw further to the right, didn't really skid. Tried throw straighter and faster, still wouldn't skid. No problem with hook. But it always hit jersey. Can anyone help me?

I mean like adjusting the way how you throw it instead of changing the ball (what if this is the only ball you have?)
