Phaze 4 Review
« on: February 01, 2022, 08:25:03 AM »
Layout: 60 x 5.5 x 70
Surface: Box

The Phaze 4 brings back the popular Velocity Core and R2S pearl.  This ball is everything you expect with this combination; Clean, continuous and control to angular motion.  On my 44ft THS, I found it as a good transition or #2 ball when my strong symmetrical or Asymmetrical is a little too early and forward.  My THS prefers clean yet stronger/smoother type motions on the fresh and more angle as they transition.  What I found with this was exactly the latter.  Still cleaner in the front then solid/hybrid covers with more length and controlled/continuous backend since the drilling is pin down for me.  What makes this great is that, the ball keeps me in the same zone which is essentially just left of the track as my fresh ball.  That keeps my confidence up because I don't have to make a major left move with my feet.  If you are a bowler who likes the Velocity Core or even just the R2S coverstock, this seems like a no brainer to me.  The ball motion expectations are there so no need to get used to its motions.  Just get out there and bowl!

On a 39ft sport pattern, the Phaze 4 as expected was tough to use on the fresh as the pearl cover did not read the overall pattern that consistently.  Like the THS, playing more of the track from a deeper inside angle was more of the answer for this ball.  Playing the inside angle still gave me enough angle downlane to get the corner pins out even being pin down. The Phaze 4 will be more successful on medium volume and medium length then necessarily something heavier then that on either side.  If you are a tournament player, this ball will be cleaner then a Zen and smoother then a UC2.  If you have a Phaze 2 and/or 3, this would be a good add to your arsenal.

Review

The Phaze 4 is the newest ball in Storm’s iconic Phaze line. Storm has combined the velocity core with the R2S pearl reactive cover stock. I tested this ball on a 42 feet typical house pattern. The Phaze 4 is not as clean as the Spectre, it reads the midlane sooner and is stronger on the backend. This ball is very versatile I was able to the right and left of the track area without losing any hitting power. This ball will be in my bag for league and tournaments.  Order one from your local pro shop today! My ball review videos are posted on YouTube channel Stanley Waite.

I think we finally got what we have all been waiting for! This is what the OG Phaze should have been.. I was extremely excited for this release as the Phaze 3 was sooooo go to me and my Phaze 2 hasn’t left my arsenal since I put it in there. This ball has already bailed me out in a couple tournaments in games 6-8. Not to mention how BEA-utiful the Phaze 4 is rolling down the lane and the Rootbeer Float smell is insanely good. I expected a much sharper reaction once it got down lane but it has proven to be much more predictable than anticipated. For me this is a ball down from my Spectre. I can keep my feet in a similar position with more predictability down lane. Video comparing the P4 to the P2 and P3 coming soon!

Storm’s Phaze 2 has been one of the most successful balls that Storm has ever made. Now you have the same Velocity Core wrapped around the proven cover in the R2S pearl. I drilled my Phaze 4, 5.5 x 5 x 3 and after throwing the ball for a little while I completely fell in love with the motion it gave me. It’s much cleaner than my Phaze 2 and gives me a little more down lane motion but they are the perfect 1-2 combination for one another. I can see myself using this ball early in blocks because it gives me a much smoother reaction compared to a Spectre or Hy Road Pearl that I would throw later in blocks, I don’t want to put the Phaze 4 into the benchmark category but it is super close. This is a must have ball for any skill level of bowler, plus it looks and smells amazing !

The Phaze 4 features the trusted R2S Pearl cover and Velocity core. With the R2S Pearl cover being clean it allows the ball to clear the heads getting down the lane and with the strong Velocity core, it creates a sharp reaction off the friction. This ball is a great transition ball when the Phaze 2 is starting up to soon and you need something to get down the lane. I have found that if you are on a THS and there is friction down lane, this ball is what you are looking for. I have been throwing the Phaze 4 and Spectre a lot since they came out and for me, they complement each other very well. When there is a not enough friction down lane for the Phaze 4 and you need something to pick up a bit earlier, then I switch to the Spectre. And the same is true when the Spectre is picking up earlier than I want I can switch the Phaze 4 which allows me to get it further down lane before it reads the friction.
