Hy-Road............
« on: January 03, 2009, 09:51:46 AM »
I have one drilled at 4*4 and thinking about taking it from out of box to 4000 abralon.

Has anyone done this and what can I expect?

I have mine at 4000.  I also have it drilled with the pin under the ring with the cg kicked left.  It was smooth with the OOB surface, but I still haven't thrown it at 4000, but I would guess it would smooth it out even more.  At least that was my reasoning for doing so.

I will get to throw it tomorrow morning in a tournie, and I'll report more later.

What's the best way to get it back close to 1500 grit polished then?

Would 800 grit plus polish be close?

Thanks.

As per Storm's technical staff, there are two ways to get back to the out of the box 1500 grit finish.  The first is to sand the ball with a 500 grit abralon pad, then sand it with a 1000 grit abralon pad and then polish the ball with Storm's Reacta Shine which finishes the ball at 1500 grit polished.  The second way Storm recommended was to sand the ball to 500 grit abralon and then finish the ball with Storm's Step 2 Compound which will finish the ball at 1500 grit polished.

Burgandy scotchbrite(320grit)/Storm step 2 will get you there if you don't have abralon pads.

I wanted to update my post about the Hy-Road at 4000 Grit Abralon.

Had a chance to throw it last night subbing for my old team at a new house.
Synthetic lanes, about 40' a standard house shot without the massive dry boards to the outside.  Not saying it was tough at all, just if you got it outside of 5 it was either washing out or barely clipping the head pin.

I started with my Black Widow, standing 15 with my feet, I line up with my left foot and I'm left handed, and throwing up 8-10.  The Widow was money when I got it in that area, but was mixing the pins up coming in a tad light.  I circled the ball a couple times and got it left and it had no chance.

I switched to the Hy-Road at 4000 in the 10th frame of the first game, playing the same line.  Anything from 8-10 was flush, and I again circled a couple shots and got it left, but it had better recovery than the Black Widow.  The ball is very smooth at 4000 with a nice arcy finish, not the huge back end get you in trouble snap.  The ball is plenty strong, with good carry.  Mine is drilled with the pin below the ring and the cg kicked out left like I said in my earlier post.  Gets the ball started up a little sooner, which makes its transition down the lane smoother and easier to handle.

If you're having issues with the OOB surface I highly recommend changing the cover to 4000.  Strong and smooth is how I would describe it.

I'm glad I didn't sell this thing like I had originally planned.
