Option between Balls
« on: April 22, 2008, 02:03:59 AM »
I like bowling demanding tournament, but only bowl league everyother week.  Just don't care for kicking the ball down the lane anymore.  I am looking for a ball that best fits between the Special Agent (pin above middle finger cg at 45) and fireup (pin under middle finger cg @ 45).  I do put alot of forward roll on the ball, but still have a 45 degree axis rotation.  My problem was when the heads dried up I could no longer get the agent down the lane and the fireup would not recover on the carry down.  This showed me I have a gap I would like to fill before nationals in May.

I have my ideas, but I like to read others opions before making my final decision.

I'd say the Rapid Fire.  It should be cleaner through the heads then the Special and have more midlane then the Fired Up to fight through the carry down.

I have a Gravity shift and a Sure fire that are drilled with the pin above. Both are great on carry down. The Gravity hooks a little sooner with a  stronger move on the backend then the surefire but I love them both.

Or, to think about it this way, same coverstock as the Special Agent, same core as the Fired Up.  Box finish is polished to get you through the heads better, but you can adjust it.

I think that'd be the right thing to fill the gap.

I do have a spit fire at home with about the same layout as the special agent that isn't seeing must lane time.  Does anyone think it would fit if I had 1000 abralon put on it.  I hate to scuff a nicely polished ball, but when the heads go the fireup gives me the better look

You can always polish the ball back up if you don't like the sanded surface.  You may want to try 2000 or 4000 abralon finishes first -- 1000 may roll too early.  Sanded pearl surfaces really grab onto friction when they find it.

I saw in your profile that you also have the Agent.  Won't that fit in this gap?  Weaker cover (pearl) than the Special (solid) but the same core.  Just another idea.

THe pin on the Agent is above the middle finger and gives me too much over/under.  I been trying different surfaces on the Agent but not the 2000 abralon.  I've tried 1000 abralon and 500 abralon with reacta shine.  But I mostly throw that on the house shot and really never pull it out in tournaments because I am not confident in it on THS.

While no two bowlers are alike and we face different conditions, for what it's worth, 2000 and 4000 abralon are my go-to surfaces on both solid and pearl equipment.  I try to avoid polished finishes whenever I can to even out over/under and improve performance in carrydown.

Yeah, 2000 is my go-to surface for most everything, unless I'm looking for a specific reaction (early early read or late late read).

Thanks Dan,

Just bowling everyother week for the past three years while going to school, working, and taking care of the family, I've feel behind a little on the tricks of the trade.  I know one thing for sure, the new lane machines make the ball snap early then the backends go away.  So you start out throwing it harder the first game to keep it from going high, then later you are trying to soften up to have it face the pocket.
