Hybrid Reactive
« on: May 13, 2008, 12:19:39 AM »
I have a question what is a Hybrid Reactive coverstock ? Is it just a pearl reactive ? Or different ? What is the differences between the hybrid as compared to the solid or pearl ? Thanks !

Hybrid reactives are part solid reactive, part pearl reactive.  The pearlization helps it skid, the solid part helps it read the midlane.  Kind of a blending of what most people associate with pearl balls and solid balls.

It's not exactly a new trick, the original red/black Vendetta was a solid/pearl mix.  Dynothane put out quite a few of them before they became the big thing they are now (the Centrifugal Mass, High Energy, 44 Magnum, The Thing, and probably others were solid/pearl blends).

For the most part Shelley 100% correct but Storm does have a Hybrid that used the R2S solid reactive of the Special Agent blended with the the R2S particle pearl of the original Shift.

That's just a solid-pearl blend with a light particle load.  Particles don't make a difference in whether a particular cover is a hybrid.

There is another kind of hybrid coverstock that doesn't get much attention and that's blending of two otherwise-unrelated covers.  The Hybrid Dirty Bomb from Lane 1 was an Activator/PK18 blend but both the Activator part and the PK18 part were solid reactives.  I believe a few other Lane 1 balls used Activator/PK18 blends.

Solid-solid blends?  That's strange to say the least.

I have a question regarding pearl gear:  is it true pearl balls aren't 100% pearl?  I think that post popped up on these boards some time ago, but I can't remember.

Pearlization is an additive just like particles.  Finely ground bits of mica are added to the cover, making it stiffer and therefore a little cleaner through the heads.  Larger bits were used in, for instance, the original Heat as an early type of particle.

More or less of the mica can be added.  More mica gives the usual pearl ball, less mica gives a ball that looks like a pearl but is still really a solid.  A few of those have been released lately: The Big-R-Bang and World Class Reactive definitely look like pearl balls but don't have enough of the pearlization to be true pearls.  I think the new AMF Heist is the same way.

That's wild.  I never knew that.  How does one know if enough pearlization additive has been added to make it truly pearl?

For the lay person, you have to rely on what the company tells you.  There's been a lot of discussion about the World Class Reactive being a solid or pearl, with a lot of conflicting opinions.  But it's a solid, regardless of the fact that anyone that looks at it would say it's a pearl.

For the coverstock developer, they must have some standard amount of pearlization that's added to make a true pearl.  They know how much goes into it.  And for all we know, it could vary from cover to cover.  Just like what percentage of a particle loading is required to make a "heavy" load versus a "light" load, someone knows and we just trust that they do.

Take a look at the AMF Code.  My first 'hybrid' and all I can say is WOW!  Everything you've mentioned concerning getting thru the heads, midlane read and backend reaction is basically 'on point'.  Can honestly say where other balls of mine become slightly unstable, this seems to be quite consistent.  Pleasantly surprised.

Would that be why I've heard someone say, "The Domination has the most pearl in it out of any ball ever?"  Was he speaking of this issue?

No idea.  I know the Domination is a very skid-flip ball on medium-heavy patterns, and skid-flip is what most people associate with shiny pearl balls.  He may figure that since it's got so much backend, it must have more pearl in it.

That's kinda sorta true of particle balls.  More particles usually mean an earlier, smoother reaction, he might be taking pearlization to the same kind of conclusion, even if it doesn't make sense.

So in layman terms....hybrid is a solid with small % of pearl and pearlised is one with higher % of pearl in the ball ?
