For a rookie bowler?
« on: December 20, 2006, 03:14:50 AM »
Hello bowling gurus. I average about a 200 using a crap house ball, I want to buy a nice ball for a beginner. Any suggestions, I was looking at the No Mercy, Special Agent, and the Total Inferno. I'm a big guy and I always throw a 16 with a lot of pin action. Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks fellas.

All those balls are a huge step up from house ball.  Two of them (No Mercy and Special Agent) are more condition-specific (heavy oil).  The Total Inferno is closer to middle of the road, but still on the high hooking end.  If this ball is going to be the only ball you own, I would go with something you could make work on any pattern, something for medium oil.  Storm has a ton of midline stuff like the Spit Fire, the Thunder Strucks, etc.  Hammer is selling the hell out of the Toxic right now.  Brunswick's Rampage, Red Zone, and Wizard are all versatile.  Every company has some good, catch-all bowling equipment that you really can't go wrong drilling up.

Agreed with the earlier comment - most of those balls are heavy oil and even if they weren't I'd walk before I ran.

Personally if I were a grown adult buying my first reactive resin ball I'd go with a medium-strength dull ball or solid polished as they are a bit more controllable than pearls.

From Storm I'd look at the Diablo, Dark Thunder, or Thunderstruck.  All of these are great mid-priced balls that will give you better drive than you are used to with a house ball without over or under reacting.

Roto Grip has some excellent entry level ball s that perform a whole lot better than entry level and they are priced very reasonable I think that you would be happy with their equipment you cannot beat the price. Go to their web site rotogrip.com and look at their equipment

Sounds like the amish dude from KingPin, as to how he kept score, lol, jk.

Keep it simple for your first couple of balls and go from there.

If you are interested in Storm balls, and are considering getting used to a hooking ball, I would pick one of the ones I have listed below:

ThunderStruck Solid
Spit Fire
Jolt Solid
Jolt Pearl

The Jolt's are basically a starting point. Although they are entry level, they are still very strong and they make a great move for me.

"My Grandpa always taught me to bowl 15 frames...10 frames...that's for quakers!" Haha have I seen that movie too many times? In all seriousness though I would have to agree...although averaging 200 with a houseball seems a little farfetched...were you bowling in a no-tap league?
