Promotion vs phase 2
« on: November 19, 2019, 08:04:04 PM »
I’m getting feedback in my league that says the promotion is a good replacement for my beloved phase 2. I just don’t see it for a low rev person based on the smoothness of the SPEC cover stock. Feedback appreciated.

Super SonIQ or an Idol Solid would be a better replacement than the Pro Motion in my opinion.

How about another Phaze II?

I myself was thinking of a second Phaze II... Several guys in league are saying the ProMotion has better continuation (I hate that word....). I figure I can't go wrong with a Phaze II...

I did not realize the Phaze II was still in the lineup!  I only looked at the first row of Master line balls on the Storm website and did not scroll down.  I also haven't seen one on a rack in a league in a long time.

Before I change my recommendation to a Phaze II, are the guys in your league trying to tell you that the Phaze II is not the right ball in your hand based on their assessment of your game?  Or is it a straight up ball comparison, devoid of anything specific to your game?

Just get another Phaze 2.  The Pro Motion is like it for the first 20-30 games, then it starts slowing down and ends up in a rather glorious place about 50 games in, but also a place that shares zero in common with the Phaze 2.  The P2 is the only reasonable replacement for itself, so I would STRONGLY suggest just doing that.

Understood and thanks to all. Two things....
1. Leftywall, the answer is straight up ball comparison in their opinion adding in the consideration that I have a fairly large thumb positive weight hole which of course I won't be able to have any more....
2. Luke, can you elaborate on where the Pro ends up after about 50 games? Really smooth, weaker, longer... What exactly? I've got several other replacements coming up in an aging arsenal (Thumb down Sure Lock, pin up Statement Solid....)

On their own, P3ish to P4 balance holes (those closer to thumbhole) will help a ball flare more, which in theory leads to more hook.  However Bill Sempsrott, creator of Blueprint, has found that "The relationship between track flare and total hook is very non-linear."

He goes on to say "In other words, an extra inch of track flare doesn’t always produce the same effect in terms of on-lane motion. Go from 1 inch of flare to 2 inches of flare and you’ll likely see a significant increase in total hook. Go from 6 inches of flare to 7 inches, however, and you probably won’t see any measurable difference at all in on-lane motion. When considering balance holes (and really, layouts in general), it’s important to think about where the ball will fall on the track flare scale both before and after adding the hole."

The Phaze 2 without taking taking bowler stats into account, flares a lot due to its high diff core.  I have no idea what your flare rings look like, but there is potential that the balance hole on your current Phaze II isn't making your ball hook any more than it would without one.

Perhaps, but I am a low rev bowler who historically prefers low Rg, high diff equipment and has seen improved motion with a P3/4 hole. I know that can be subjective though. I realize in advance it's quite possible that new phaze 2 will not = old phaze 2. I'm even thinking of plugging my balance hole as a relatively inexpensive test to see the effect.... To me, this has become a new ball needed scenario, and that's never the reason to replace a spot in the bag. Add to, test, experiment, cover a different condition, sure, but to fill a spot when the solution is already available? Not so much.... I think plugging the weight hole is on the horizon before choosing....
