Storm/Rotogrip cracking issues
« on: June 06, 2007, 12:19:42 AM »
I had to take my Special Agent and Spit Fire back to the pro shop I got them drilled at last night.  After only about 20-25 games, the Special Agent cracked from the pin (half an inch over the ring finger) up and all the way up around the finger holes to the bottom side of the middle finger!  My Spit Fire cracked from the pin (likewise, above ring) across and down to the top of the middle finger.

Apparently, many of the Storm/Rotogrip balls sold in that pro shop in the past few weeks have been cracking exactly the same way.  Storm/Rotogrip had no problems taking all these balls back for a refund, so I got another Special Agent and Spit Fire punched up last night with  basically the same drill patterns as before.  I actually had to wait on Tony to finish up drilling a Mystic for someone else who had their previous one crack all the way around the fingers after only three games.  And he had drilled up a Storm ball for someone else just a little earlier in the day after that one also cracked in the same way.  All of these balls were sold from the shop from the same shipment of balls.  No other balls were cracking like this--just Storm/Rotogrip equipment.  It certainly was annoying for me to have to get a couple more balls punched up, but I really felt bad for Tony running the pro shop.  That's a lot of time and effort he's had to put into drilling replacement balls for his customers for no charge!  Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this seemingly rampant cracking problem?  I'm just curious at this point the more I think about it.

I haven't heard anything about it.  I just got a Mystic but it hasn't cracked or anything yet.  My Special Agent has a lot of games on it and nothing.  Same with the Spit Fire.

These actually were the first real issues Tony has had with balls he's drilled cracking.  They all cracked from the pin out and away from the finger holes, and all the issues showed on balls drilled within about a 2-3 week span, nothing from before that has shown cracking problems.

Here's an example of what the cracking on the Special Agent looked like -- notice it doesn't even go near the finger holes

Sounds like your driller needs to sharpen his bits...may be creating too much heat using a dull drill bit thus making the ball more susceptible to cracking...just a thought...

Over 5 years, I see more C300/Storm have cracking issues around the fingers than any other brand. Don't know what it is, but handling warranty issues with distributors has never been a problem.
