Pin Length
« on: February 01, 2007, 02:54:51 AM »
I know this isn't a storm related question but my current and new ball is storm, so my question is what is the best pin length to get when you purchase a ball.  I don't have the slightest clue what effect the pin has on the ball.  Does it affect the hook potential or what?  Thanks,

dlenart...I don't think he was asking about Pin to PAP distances, i.e. how strong to drill the pin.

ktallen...If I understand your question you are asking about starting Pin distances at it relates to the CG of an undrilled ball...correct?  If so, a 3" Pin is usually an all purpose pin distance provided the top weight of the ball is around 3oz's or so.  This usually allows for almost any drilling to be put into a ball (pin up, pin down, etc.).

So does the top weight affect the ball as well.  Does it hook more?  So ideally I need to get a ball with around a 3 to 3.5 inch pin placement and what top weight?    Thanks for the responses.  The first one wasn't what I was looking for but it had some useful information in it.

About 3 oz +/- 0.5oz should be a good working range...along with the 3" pin.

Again...these ranges give you a ton of drilling options without having to utilize larger weight holes or drilling holes deeper, but that does depend on the final drilling.  Basically I can utilize a 3" pin and 3oz of top weight for basically any drilling without having to worry about static weights and what not.  Anything too far out of this range might not be ideal for a particular drilling.

But if you have a drilling in mind there could be more ideal specs depending on what it is.

Regarding online retailers.  Another one to check out is Buddies Proshop.  I have bought 4 or 5 balls from them.  Very competitive on price, quick delivery, and you can speck out top weight and pin location.  Good company.
