Symmetric Advantage
« on: January 29, 2009, 09:40:42 PM »
Is there an advantage to using symmetric balls vs. asymmetric balls? I notice how popular there symmetric stuff is an just wonder if there is benefit from using those balls on a condition where an asymmetric works well too. Any thoughts?

If you have an inconsistant release then symetrical is the way to go. I personally like the control of symetric and being in the lower rev catagory, don't think I can get the full benefit that asymetricals can give.

It's all how you match up.  The only way to find out is to experiment.  I bowl w/assyms but experimented twice w/symms.  I have a Special Agent & a Dimension.  I just can't get the reaction for some reason w/those bowls.  I don't know if it's just me, but I do have better luck w/the Special when I use it more than the Dimension.  Could it be psychological???

For me, asymmetric balls tend to be more condition-specific.  Either they're carrying everything, or carrying nothing.  There's no in-between.  If I am throwing something asymmetrical and hang a couple 10 pins, it's time to put it up because that ball is just not going to carry again for the rest of the night.

How do you find what type of core your equipment has?

As a lower speed stroker, I wholly agree with you Dan!

I have had the exact same experience with asymms. Once I hang a coupla 10-pins, I just put the ball up. No amount of moving on the lane is going to change the outcome. Conversely, when the ball is hitting.....it's carrying the world, and everyone is looking at you like..."How is he doing that?"

dougb,
Since you are abviously a newby to the sport, just keep checking in to Ballreviews on a regular basis and listen to the chatter back and forth, and you'll start to understand. Also, be sure and go to the Ball manufucturers listing on the left here, and study every core of every ball you currently use.

Generally speaking, if you could make a section of your core, (cut it in half) and one half of the core appears to be a mirror image of the other, no matter where you make that cut......then you have a symmetrical core.

With asymms there is generally only one cut that will give you the mirror image. Any other cut from any other angle will give you two completely asymm parts. Hope that helps.

Just ask...

Of the 5 balls you have listed in your signature, only one was asymmetric before drilling -  The Gravity Shift

Oh yeah, did I mention there is basically no such thing as a symmetrical ball after you put 3-4 holes in it?
