I have a question.

when you say you've changed the surface, what exactly have you done? Have you gone right over the OOB with 4000? or what?

just curious for a point of reference.

Comparing all the balls at their different OOB surfaces is tough, for instance the Reign of Fire hooks about as much OOB (1000 Abralon) as an Invasion oob (4000 Abralon).  Take the Invasion down to 1000 and its no contest.  The R3X cover on the invasion creates quite a bit more friction.  Same thing with the dimension with its R2X cover.  Each ball will give you different reaction shapes with varying cores and different covers that create different levels of friction.

This ball replaces the very popular T-Road Solid.  Everyone i ever talked to loved the troad solid for its consistent reaction and versatility.  The Reign of Fire takes that reaction and amps it up a bit downlane.  Still extremely consistent but stronger downlane and through the pindeck.  A very good all around ball for both sport shots and house shots.  With a surface adjustment this could make a very good benchmark type ball for any style of bowler.

Well w/ both OOB, the Reign of Fire reads the lane earlier thanks to the 1000 abralon surface and is much smoother overall.  The invasion pushes further because it is 4000 and is much more downlane.  I havent thrown the Reign of Fire and Dimension side by side so i dont know on that one without guessing.  Also remember, these are the differences i see, so your results may vary slightly.

TJ will be drilling up an invasion soon, i will be sure to have him chime in here with the differences he sees.

Right now i have my Reign of Fire at about 4000, it gives me something to go to when my Invasion is too much ball (I have the Invasion at 4000 also).  I then have an Original Reign at OOB i can go to when the Reign of fire is too much.

good to know.

what about balls that came polished such as the nomad series? asking because there would be a big difference in hitting a polished ball with just 4000 vs (for example) any number of combinations of abralon pads (500/4000 or 500 thru 4000)

would be good to know.

Hey guys just wanted to throw my quick review in here on Reign of Fire compared to the Reign. I am the other bowler showed on videoballreviews.com

 MY SPECS: high ball speed, PAP:  5  1/4  x  1  3/8 up, Med-High Revs
           
 DRILLING:I have my Reign and Reign of Fire drilled up 5  x  4  pin 1" above midline with axis in the thumb quadrant.

 COMPARISON: The Reign of Fire is easily 5-7 boards stronger up front on the lane then the original Reign. The Reign of Fire and Reign are a great 1-2 combo for any league/ tournament player. The Reign of Fire will handle alot of oil in the heads and towards the end of your league or tournament block the Reign will get thru the heads and have a sharper backend reaction.
 
MY PREFERENCE: I prefer throwing the Reign of Fire on the fresh (House shots/ Sport Shots as long as the oil is long/ heavy enough). And I roll my Reign alot on my 2nd shift leagues where there is less head oil and alot of carrydown.
 
SURFACE ADJUSTMENTS: I love my Reign of Fire at 1000 abralon.. with my high ball speed I need the ball to check up early and read the breakpoint. I also tried the Reign of Fire at 4000 as seen on the video. This would be good for bowlers with lower speeds and or bowlers who bowl on lower volumes of oil.

The Invasion has a low RG and a stronger coverstock.  Of course it's going to have less backend and not finish as strong if you put too much surface on it.  That's why it comes at a higher grit out of the box.
