Pro Pin Balls, are they worth it?
« on: March 10, 2004, 11:48:21 AM »
OK, i have seen these balls on EBAY, saying they are Pro Pin, and they are what the PRO's like to use cuz they create big flare and big backend, and bla bla bla,

well my cousin won a Super Charge from ebay, well when he got the ball it had a 6 1/2 inch pin, with 1.68top weight.   well he had the box in his car, along with the ball, and on the box, it had a sticker saying PRO PIN.  he also said it came with a specific instruction book for drillings.

Anyways his ball got drilled with the Pin out on his PAP, and the CG is way over in the Negative side, about 1inch above his thumb.   I couldnt believe this drilling, but he told me the ball hooks like crazy lol.

I am wondering if all PRO PINS come like this, and need a drilling something like this too?

Great topic everyone!

The PRO-PIN balls are ones that we regularly use to supply the National Staff players on the truck. Frequently the guys out on the tour will use a ball with the pin above the fingers, cg and/or RAD swung way out towards the PAP, and a large extra hole. This layout generally clears the heads well and still provides heavy midlane roll. I am actually taking a Triple X just like this one with me to the ABC Nationals this weekend.

These balls really roll great. You will get more midlane roll out of a 5 to 5.5" pin from PAP than ever before.

To help with layout options, special drill instructions are included in each box as well.

Good luck everyone...

So then Steve, do you care to explain why every other ball company actually discounts these "pro pin" balls and sells them as blems?

If anyone buys this, I have a broken down car I'll sell you with a small "Mechanic's Engine" markup.

I agree with Storm Tech.  I had a Reaction Rev with a 6 1/2 inch pin out.  I put the pin high over the ring finger and the C.G swung out 1 inch below the PAP with a huge weighthole into the PAP.  I can't really describe the reaction, it was so smooth, and got through the heads so well.  The way it revved up in the midlane then made a hard arc off the dry boards really made it a dangerous ball on the given condition.  I have yet to be able to duplicate a ball with that reaction.  I would look into one of these "Pro Pin" balls but it doesn't make any sense to pay $40 extra for a "PRo Pin" when I paid $60 NIB for my Blem Reaction REv.

The pro pin are legit. I was reading an article about pin placement . The article said if you plan to compete at the pro level , you better have a ball with a 5 or 6 pin in you arsenal .

Pin placement and "pro pins" are not the same thing.  A ball with a 5" or 6" pin placement relative to your PAP can be achieved in many ways, with and without balls that have 5-6 inch pin-to-CG distances.

DP,

The $40 extra is due to the bid process on Ebay, not from Storm. You get what you pay for...The bowlers I know who purchased the Pro Pins from Pro Shops have been more than pleased with the value of these balls...The results speak for themselves...Storm maunfactured equipment has won 11 of 19 Tour stops, and many of these wins came with the Pro Pin series....The XXX is the hottest ball in the country...

I called storm and they said they make the pro pins and some people on the tour love them but we shouldnt pay more for them,we should pay less.he said a full roller could use them and a no thumb plus others could just depends on how they drill it.hope that helps some.

Storm has no control over what they sell for on EBAY. That is just the bid process. What we sell them for may/may not be reflected in the price of the ball to the consumer.

These balls are sent out to the PBA National Tour Truck. This is a fact. And Pete Weber and Ryan Shafer and Brian Himmler and many other professionals often use these PRO-PIN balls to make tv shows and earn a living. This is also a fact.

The following are a few FACTS on balls such as the PRO-PINS, which have the weight block or core shifted away from the center of the ball.

* Enhanced dynamics
* Stronger preferred spin axis
* More drilling versatility
* Superior reaction characteristics
* Enables drillers to use larger extra holes increasing flare potential
and ball reaction

Everything in my previous post was true and correct. Ask any skilled player and they will tell you that different oil patterns and different lane surfaces call for a variety of equipment. If you use only pin-in balls, for example, you will definitely be at a disadvantage on many occasions.

If you have anymore questions regarding the comparison of performance of a bowling ball with a pin closer to the center of gravity versus one with the pin further away, feel free to call me. We'll even pay for the call. 800-369-4402.

A 5" pin can be good, and a 0-1" pin can be good, but the key here is neither should cost anymore than the other.

No, they are not.  I have had and drilled several...I have one sitting in my bag right now.  These actually limit the drilling options to get a reaction that will be acceptable for most players.  There are some very specific reactions that it is easier to get with a long pin out distance, but for most of us, we don't need those reactions.

Storm may not be setting the price on these things (as is the case on Ebay), but they are certainly encouraging the price hikes by labeling them as something special with the "Pro Pin" designation.

If the balls are blems, call them blems like every other company. If the balls are fine, as Storm says they are, then they should be sold with the same box and labels as every other ball. There is no special name for balls with 0-1" pins, so why for balls with 5-6" pins? It's like throwing "Limited Edition!" on 1 of every 5 balls off the production line, just to dupe consumers and create a buzz.

Storm Tech, would you care to explain this point?  Obviously you can do some specific layouts with long pin outs that you cannnot do with shorter pins, but that does not equal versatility.

Well here is the latest about pro pins.  I talked with some of the pros on tour.  From what many are telling me the these balls are blems.  Plain and simple.  Some say that the pro pin is for many of the pro who want the ball to actually go long and turn sideways.  Guys like robert smith, couch, etc.  That is why they call it a pro pin. Unfortunately, they do not sell many of these balls since most of the ball manufacturers dont do this intentinally.  But this is the best information I have right now.  I will get back with everyone as I get more info from the ball companies

THANKS STEVE,

I guess for some of these guys/gals, they really don't understand exactly what a pin-in/pin-out does. A Pin-in 0-2" will create an earlier roll, the ball will roll-up early and can be extremely effective for someone with less hand. It will give them the reaction (sort-of)like a guy with hand.

ON-THE-OTHER-HAND....A ball with a pin-out will allow a guy with alot of hand to play a NORMAL LINE(less-drastic)the ball will read the mid-lane much better and get-down-the-lane easier and then savagely read the dry for a LEFT-TURN-CLYDE. That is the way it has been explained to me. So as far as the PRO-PIN is concerned perhaps it is a "PRO-PIN" for those with tons of hand and has trouble getting the ball down the lane before over-reacting or reacting early..
