Next Toy!
« on: April 22, 2008, 03:43:50 AM »
Greetings Storm Troopers.

Recently I bowled in my local state tournament, and as of the beginning of week 4 out of 5, I was in third.  So hopefully my scores hold up and I stay near the top, I'm going to take my winnings and get a new ball

What I have now:
Paradigm Passion
Pyro
T-Road Pearl
Roto Grip Neptune

I have 2 thoughts as to next ball:  strong pearl or weaker dull.

I was throwing my friend's Gravity Shift and holy hell I am in love with that ball.  I was playing left to right SO much more easily than I was with any of my pearls, and the carry had me oogling.  I could see that a Gravity would fill the gap between my Passion and Pyro (it's been a problem more than once, unfortunately). Or I was thinking of going with something between my T-Road and my Neptune (Street Rod Solid).  My T-Road is much stronger than advertised, and I love it to death, but it doesn't quite do what I was expecting...well, not completely yet.  And my Neptune goes straighter than an arrow most of the time (it gets more use shooting 10 pins lately ).

What are your thoughts?

I would recommend the Gravity for sure or even the Cell. You might also think about the Rapid Fire and or possibly the Sure Fire.

Through the Gravity for the first time tonight and I'm quite impressed. It's a super strong pearl that doesn't over react in the back. Quite a nice piece of equipment. Even bettern on a THS it covers the same amount of boards as my identically drilled Cell so when I need to move it's just a ball change and nothing else.

I know on a PBA pattern or sport shot this won't be the case, but on a THS they are great compliments to one another.

As much as I would love another ball from the Fire Line, I think there'd be some overlap between that and my Pyro and T-Road Pearl.  That, and I think the Gravity would help open me playing deeper on some patterns.  I know my Pyro is great for that on dryer conditions, but the house I'm at is pretty heavy and when it breaks down it's still pretty thick and my Pyro can't quite make the turn...not consistently anyway.

I had a chance to throw both street rods yesterday and the gravity.  I was most impressed with the reaction from the street rod solid.  It had great control on the backend, and just read the lane very well. The gravity was excellent as well, you cant go wrong with either ball.

If the house is as "tight" as advertised, you should definitely had a Rapid Fire in hand. The Rapid was made to handle just what you are looking to achieve, hook!!! Watch the video and listen to Norm Duke tell you, "...now we have hook..."

The pattern I see in your bag is that your shiny pearl pieces are not matching up consistently. I am just throwing my 2¢ out there but I'd suggest lightly scuffing them by hand. Take them down slowly until they react the way you'd like them to react.

Why not take your Passion up to 2,000 or 1,000 grit so that you can use it when they are tighter. A 500 grit ball will act like an eraser and takes the oil off of the front of the lane where a bowler needs to see it. Not to mention that the ball is losing it's energy so fast it will burn up and not turn over when it hits the breakpoint. Just a little food for thought...

Mr. Straight Ball:  Well, my Pyro is as close as I have to a Rapid Fire at the moment.  And on the fresh shot I'm bowling on, the Pyro goes straight as a dart for a while.  The Passion really opens up the lanes for me, giving me a LOT more room for error compared to everybody else.  I think I may have misused the term "tight" in the past regarding my home house, and confused it for "oily" or some other term, lol.  Either way, I'm very happy with what my gear is at. There are just times where I'd like to play deeper and I don't have a pearl ball to turn the corner for that without having to slow it down to a crawl.  And I guess I should have mentioned this, but my Pyro and T-Road are sanded, each at 2000 at the moment.
