Testing & endless blabber.....
« on: August 22, 2006, 12:31:08 AM »
I got a chance to take my Dark Thunder out for a test drive yesterday. It's a used one I got off ebay. I did have it plugged and drilled for me, but it's pretty well polished however and I had a tough time getting it to turn. I've read such great things about this ball and want it to work for me. Granted, I was on fresh oil, it was pretty slippery out there, but I had my X-Factor Deuce with me as well and threw it for comparison and got a lot more back end movement. I'm a pretty low revver, so I never set out to cover many boards. I slowed everything down with the DT a bit and got a 4 bagger, but I'd rather not change my approach/timing. Anyway, before I left, I had it scuffed up closer to oob conditions. Maybe even under 1000. So, I'll try it again today like that.
On another front, I bought a new Thunderstruck Pearl. I have yet to have it drilled and now debating as to whether to get it drilled or put it up for sale and maybe try a Passion. I've been using my Deuce for two years now, and I guess I just got used to the reaction and feel. Everything I've read about the Thunderstruck Pearl makes me think I'm going to have a tougher time making it move. I'm just trying to get a game plan together before the season starts.

I can tell you how my DT is and maybe that will help.  Let's see...

I did the high flare drilling which I believe was layout #3.  I wanted a ball that was a good deal more juiced up than my Tropical.  Whoops!  This ball was a bit stronger than I anticipated (a lot more juiced up).  That's not to say that it's a bad thing, but it was hooking earlier than I wanted.  Therefore, I am currently putting the Reacta Shine from Storm on the ball to shine up the surface more.  Now when I practice with it, it retains all the power to destroy the pins.

Now you say it came shined up?  I can tell you that this ball has a great amount of power and hook if you can figure out how to use it right.  If you are using it on your fresh shot and it looks like maybe it is just skidding all the way down the lane, try the OOB condition (1000 grit matte).  If it just seems to be turning sluggishly and hitting light maybe it is dying out on you.  I am telling you if you have it set up right for your style and conditions, this ball makes it easy.  It doesn't have the uber-snap that a lot of people think they want but it has a really smooth/strong/even turn that you can get a good read on.

It's hard to tell without seeing your ball but if it isn't making a hard turn to the pocket it's either slipping too far or it's dying out early.  I guess you will know after tonight, but I can tell you I don't have a great amount of revs either (I throw using the classic stroker style) but this ball does all the work for me.  I think if I wanted to use it as my first ball on fresh shot, I may need to scuff it up again.  I've used this ball sanded on some heavy oil and it did the job, but I just don't bowl on those conditions enough to warrant sanding the ball.

I threw two games at lunchtime What a difference changing the surface of the DT made! Had a tough time not going Brooklyn. This was the reaction I was hoping for. This, I can work with.
