« on: February 07, 2008, 07:24:56 PM »

Most high performance pieces only have the advertised cores in the 14-16lbs balls (so that high end pieces are not available at 13 lbs. or lower at all). Some manufacturers use generic core shapes below this, down to 12 lbs, but that's individual. And, yes, in some cases there are just pancakes, in the so-called "light weight" balls. You need to do some legwork, check RG tables or browse the manufacturers' websites.

Some manufactures do publish this infomation on the drill sheet.

e.g. From Brunswick site

See page 2.

They also have an overview about which core is in which ball at which weight, in the pro shop section. Good service. Ebonite/Hammer have a complete RG list, that helps, too. Storm is a bit low on such info...

Yes VERY often at 13 or 12 you are paying for THE Coverstock of the top flight ball ONLY!

That is why very often in those weights just buying the second line ball makes so much sense.

Particularly if you think the bowler is going to be moving UP in weight...why pay 180 dollars for just the coverstock.

HOWEVER...often these balls are very good for the bowler because of the weaker core put in it.

For example years ago my son about age 10 at the time got a Navy Stinger  say 11 pounds...good strong coverstock and a high rg to help him get the ball down the lane say 2.57 and a lower differential say .30.  Great ball for him and easy to get to the breakpoint with young boy speed and it hooked quite a bit.

Ebonite has a similar chart on their current balls.

I believe there is some good logic behind these higher rg cores in the lighter weights....just remember they are not really worth it to pay for the latest great technologies of the top of the line ball.

REgards,

PS Ebonites chart
Note the higer rgs and lower diffs starting at 13 pounds.
PPS...HOWEVER...I believe SOME companies put the high power core in lower weight...don't know if the same...but look at this.... Black Widow from Hammer whether this is a good idea or not....I don't know.

This is from an email on a question I had for Storm last month:

"The only balls we use the pancake weight block at 13lbs is the plastic balls. All other lines, other than the Premier and Master Line, use a modified Thunder Weight Block. The Modified Thunder is the same shape that we used in the Hot Rod Super Sport.

Our Master Line and Premier Line utilize the same shape weight block 12-16 pounds."

That should take care of Storm's line, I'm sure I heard on here about MoRich having the same core in lighter weight also but I'll defer to those that know for sure.
