Sure Fire by far

i'd go with the rapid this is the best ball i've owned in years maybe the most versatile aslo!
-
I have both. Rapid Fire has been the better ball for me, by far.

To really answer that question, what kind of lane conditions are most commone for you to play on? What line are you looking at playing? Everyone's definition of "benchmark ball" is not the same. I have thrown both but find the Sure Fire to be my "benchmark ball" this does not mean it is the first ball out of my bag (that is a Grand Illuision), but it is the ball that I can throw on most any lane condition to get a read on how the lanes are playing. So are looking for the first ball out of the bag or a benchmark ball as I described.

Lane conditions are as follows: THS Oiled to 37ft buffed to 40. Medium oil 10 to 10. I feel most comfortable playing 3rd arrow out to about 6 but I'm trying to be more versatile so I can play anywhere on the lane.
I have slightly above average speed and I'm somewhere in between a cranker and a tweener so I'm told. My revs and speed match up pretty well. I do however have a medium to low track.
I am thinking about using either layout #1 (On Storm drill sheet) 5" to PAP with MB on track next to thumb hole or layout #2 4 1/4 inches to PAP with MB placed along PAL.
What I'm ultimately looking for is a control ball. Smooth arch type reaction (on above lane condition)that won't over or under react. This will be my primary ball until I can get another piece which won't be for another couple months.

Rapid Fire is solid reisn and no filler with a lighter weight core just like Legend/Lanemaster balls are.

IMHO i would go with the Sure Fire. The Hybrid coverstock is very tweekable. I feel they can be played with more than others to get the exact reaction your looking for.

Sure Fire. One of the better benchmark balls I've used in awhile and very versatile. It's stronger than Storm made it out to be but it's very good on fresh oil and when you come across any carrydown.

Rapid Fire, one of best balls I've ever thrown.

Sure Fire. Can be used on almost any condition, and is effective playing inside or out. As close to a one ball arsenal as you will find.
-
If you can it would be nice to be able to throw both balls and choose from there if that is possible.
If that is not possible given the conditions you are throwing on and the line you like to throw I would still lean towards the Sure Fire, I have found it to be and extremely versatile ball that react well to changes in surface.
In the end with what you could purchase a new Sure Fire for on closeout I would look at picking one on closeout and with the money you save then maybe you could look at a second ball for you lineup a little quicker.
Just my 2 cents.
Good luck, either way I do not think you could go wrong!

I thought that I would have an input also
however, I would suggest NOT using the "Rapid Fire Solid" as a benchmark ball as it is really a very aggressive ball so I would suggest to you the "Surefire" although I have never thrown one.
I have the "Rapid Fire Solid" and I absolutely love throwing it but I wouldn't say that its a benchmark type ball since its a monster on the lanes...just my $0.02

rapid fire solid will give you more length even tho it is a solid it does get down the lane quite well. It has a strong move to the pocket on the backend not really snappy but does backend. The sure fire is very midlane for me I left it oob surface and it handled oil very well its very predictible and is great against over under. Either would be a great choice just both balls give differnt looks

People may not know this, but the Rapid Fire Solid has a wee bit of pearl in it which explains why it gets down the lane well. Yes it is still a solid, but does have touch of pearl which helps give it it's length.

Ah, the Blue Vibe "some pearl additive" scenario!

I just got a Rapid Fire punched up a couple hours ago. The layout is 5 1/2" pin, 3" MB, with a 2 1/4 pin buffer. This put the pin pretty far up and just slightly left of my bridge. The x-hole is in gradient position 3.
I laid out this ball completely different from everything else I have. Most everything else I own has pins in the 4-5" range. Steve Richter discussed with me using weaker pins so I could let the ball do more of the work on the back of the lane. My ball drillers and I discussed this also and they came up with this layout.
I only threw it a couple games, but this ball has a WOW factor. The first thing I noticed is how absolutely straight it goes down the lane. There was very little midlane read. Then at the breakpoint it is like someone kicks it left. The transition is incredibly fast. If you looked up "skid flip" in a dictionary it would show this ball with this layout. I hung quite a few corners due to the ball going so darn long and creating so much angle.
The closest reaction I've ever seen to this was with a Domination, but this ball is a lot cleaner. Based on what I've seen so far, I wouldn't recommend it as a control ball. You probably could lay it out so it is much smoother, and also take the surface down since it comes polished. I just think there are better choices out there. I can't compare it to the Spit Fire because I've never seen one around here.
