REIGN OF FIRE as a benchmark ball???
« on: February 15, 2010, 12:22:29 AM »
I need a ball to be a step down of mi mission and a step up of my avalanche slide.

Can i use the reign of fire as a control-medium oil ball?

i dont want a pearl because i already will have the mission

is it a lot stronger than the rapid fire?

thanks

No, the Reign of Fire is above the Mission. It reads the lanes very well though, so I guess if you took it to 4000 it might make a good benchmark ball.

Personally, while they are still making them I would pick up a Hy-Road and take it to 2000 or pick up a Furious and leave it at box finish, because both would accomplish what you are looking for.

The ROF is worlds stronger than the Rapid Fire, and they hook differently.

All depends on surface and layout. The ROF and the Rapid Fire are not all that different, except for the factory surface prep, with the RF slightly stronger at the same surface finish. I agree with Moto in that taking the ROF to 4k would work, same could be said for RF.
I would also agree with him about the Hyroad, may be the best ball of the 3.

I will be putting some polish on my pin up rof to tame it down some and use it as a medium oil ball. I will let you know how it works out. I am hoping for a look similar to the reign but without the over and under that I usually get from pearls. They say this ball is very versatile.. we will see once I put polish on it!

Hmm..Lets see what I have in this bag..A Reign of Fire, 2 Invasions, and a green Avalanche.. how can I lose....

....HG-300(2006 w/Desert Heat)...299 (03/15/09 w/Agent Orange)...HS-776 (Hot Sauce Pearl & Ebonite Magic)

Yeah, of course it could be a bench mark ball.  I prefer solids as a benchmark, not saying others can't be.  My Attitude is my benchmark at the moment & it goes well w/my original Shift.  I do want a RoF to go w/my Reign, but it's gonna have to wait a while, at least til summer.

I still want an Invasion, but it's getting mixed reviews at the moment.  But most of the negative reviews on it are coming from posters I've never heard much of, if any before.  Sort of makes me wonder..... hmmmmmm.

I wouldn't use the Reign of Fire as a benchmark ball.  The ROF is a very strong solid reactive that is as strong or stronger than the Mission.  I rolled the ROF this past Monday night during a Storm PBA Experience clinic & demo day conducted by Tim Mack and Jason Belmonte.  I'm really impressed with the ROF for use on sport & PBA lane conditions.  I tested it on 3 different lane conditions a THS pattern, the Viper and the Shark.  On the THS, it just dominated the pattern & I was lined up deep inside to use a swing shot.  On Viper, the ROF played effortlessly up the twig & made a nice strong arc to the pocket.  On Shark, I lined up on 28 and rolled right up the 18 board with very good results & pin carry.  I would have the ROF in my bag for medium to heavy oil lane conditions and tournaments.  Personally I would stick with the HyRoad or the Grand Illusion as my benchmark ball in my bag, but the ROF will give you terrific results on freshly oiled lanes, especially if your house lays down higher volumes of oil.

Everyone has a different idea of what a "benchmark ball" is it seems...  So there is no right & wrong answer to the question.

But my idea for a "benchmark ball" is a ball that I throw 1st in warmups to see what it does, when throwing in my comfort zone, reading the lane conditions & tells me what to do...  example:  I take my solid Attitude Shift.  I like a tighter inside line standing on the approach just right of center & targeting around the 2nd arrow or between it & 3rd.  If my ball hooks through the nose, then I adjust in on my next ball.  If it's still too much, I ball down to my original Shift... If it skates & doesn't hit pocket, I move right.. That's just an example, & my example.

Now I don't know if that's what jonah means... I also don't know or think that it's a "step down of (his) mission" either....  It also depends on the surface of the ball & the guy's style...  So maybe a cranker wouldn't use a solid as his "benchmark ball"...

Exactly right Monster Pike, i gravitate towards my HyRoad & Grand Illusion as the hybrid coverstocks give me a good ball to test the lane conditions.  That way I know if I need to go with something weaker or stronger on any given bowling practice or league session.  Lots of times, I can just stay with either of those balls the whole way because of the consistency, versatility & control these benchmark balls provide.
