Up the back release, big hooking ball?

Buddy of mind is looking for a Storm that "hooks," to replace his 811 c/t. He's not happy with the c/t because it burns out on him, he doesn't like the hit and carry. He's thinking sync, but I'm thinking with his "up the back" release he'll run into the same issue. Most of the stuff he has has kind of a hook set motion, and a lot of times it's DOA. Any suggestions? I'm thinking maybe the Lucid? Let me know what you guys think, as I haven't thrown either ball. Thanks in advance.

Tell him to get his fingers more on the side of the ball at release otherwise, with minimal tilt, pretty much everything will have a similar result. Bowling balls react by the bowler's attributes, which translate to proper balance, leverage and the correct, proper forces applied to the bowling ball.

Try what Rico said.

If you still cant get anywhere, it sounds like the ball is too strong for the lane condition if the ball really is "burning out" on him. With that being said, he should be looking for something more in the mid-range balls with hybrid or pearl covers as that will help the ball skid and have more backend reaction or "hook" in some people's vocabulary. The 811 C/T and the Sync are very strong balls, I doubt he would see much difference between them unless he were to give a very weak drill to the Sync and polish it

+1 with RICO,

Of the new stuff I've seen, the Reign On is extremely angular and hooks well on multiple patterns. It's the closest to the original I've seen. Maybe that would be a better reaction than a SYNC which is going to have a stronger core and cover than the 811C/T. If the ball is burning up, the answer is not to go stronger.

The ball goes through 3 phases. Skid, hook, then roll. So with less tilt and more surface that process on most conditions will happen quickly and give you the results described. You can imagine on heavier oil that wouldn't like be as much an issue.

Since he isn't seeing that in league an easy low or no cost option is to try adjusting the surface. I'd take it up to 4000 grit and add heavy polish to see if that helps. If its too much length you can easily dial it back.

Ideally you would want the 811ct as your heavy oil ball and add another ball for his more regular league condition. Dull surface is not his friend. If he really likes Storm try something like the Lights Out.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the feedback. I'm thinking along the same lines, where I want him to avoid those early heavy rolling solids, but he's convinced that he needs top of the line stuff. He also throws an aura at 4000 that he likes, wants something stronger than that. Basically he wants the aura to be his medium ball. At this point he is basically scrapping the 811. In going to change the surface first and see how that goes, but its in his mind now that the ball is junk.

lol. I'm going to do my best to convince him, and I did suggest the paranormal, but he wants to try something new lol. Worst part is is that this guy is a buddy of mine, so I don't want him to waste his money, but that might be the only way for him to learn to trust me i guess. lol.

Going straight up the ball causes the ball to roll earlier.  If he doesn't want to change that, or polish the ball as previously recommended, I recommend the Roto Grip Totally Defiant.  It is a top of the line Polished Pearl with an Asymmetric Core.  I love mine.

I have very much up the back release with low axis tilt.  Lucid has been a great ball for me, especially on longer patterns.  The core shell matchup gives me a very strong change of direction even with the low axis rotation.  Great ball to play inside with, although I like it better on a bit flatter tournament pattern than on a house shot. 

Sync, Nano, Nano pearl all have too much shell for the strong asymmetric cores.  I get the roll out problem much worse with them than the Lucid.  Vivid, even with the great core had the same problem.
