Replug and Drill Agent question
« on: June 27, 2006, 06:29:06 AM »
Hey all, i've been thinking about plugging and redrilling my Agent to 4.5" instead of the 3 3/8" that I have it at right now.  I got it drilled at 3 3/8" initially because I didnt have a lot of revs at the time and it seemed like the way to go if I wanted a lot of hook from the ball.  Well, I have a lot more revs now, maybe medium to medium-high, and the ball is erratic at break point, and hooks about .5-1 foot sooner then id like.

So what would I expect to see if I changed it to a 4.5" drill or label drill?  I like to play down and in between the 1st and 2nd arrow but would also like the option to play deeper like 3 to 1 arrow on drier conditions.  Any suggestions?

Before plugging the ball, I would suggest a surface change to get more length and a more consistent reaction. I would start by sanding the ball, starting at 600 and work your way up 800 and stopping at 1200. No polish. Make sure to sand the ball on four sides and take your time. This will reduce the friction that your ball is reading, giving you more length and a more consistent reaction.

By adding 7/8 pin to pap, you would see a little more length, maybe 5-10" but anytime you make the ball hold it's axis rotation/tilt longer, the stronger the breakpoint. I belive you'll see more of what you want with a surface change.

By "erratic" do you mean it is very over/under?  Have you tried adjusting the surface any?

Well, I have my surface at 1500 polished, so how would stopping at 1200 grit give it length?

CZ: What kind of reaction would that drill give me?

Sir Bowl:  When I say erratic, i probably mean unpredictable.  Sometimes it will hook and drive smoothly, sometimes it will hook and roll out, sometimes it will hook but hit the pins before it goes into its roll stage, sometimes it will hook, then stop, then hook more....very unpredictable.

Its not me because my label drilled Doom reacts the same exact way everytime I throw it and I know exactly what to expect from it.

I would venture to say that you could easily adjust the surface and achieve the same results (or close to the same) as plugging and redrilling.  If you want something with more length and a smoother backend, I would suggest trying a 2000 grit abralon pad (or possibly a 4000 grit pad), and leave the surface with a matte finish.  That should give you a much different look that the current 1500 polished.

The final polishing product is 1500 but the underlying grit is about 600 before the polishing process. When resurfacing a ball I would normally suggest sanding the ball up to 600 and then adding the Step #2 polish. This will give you closest reaction, as when it was new.

Before you decide to plug and redrill the ball, why dont you show us another video of the changes you have made in your release since the first video that you posted ???

How can you go from having no revs to medium , medium/high in just a few months, especially since you are new to the sport ?

True, your PAP may have also changed with your change in release.  I wouldn't be quick to plug and redrill when you are still learning.  Being consistant in your release isn't something that will happen over the course of a few weeks, it takes time.  I've been bowling most of my life, and my PAP (release) will fluctuate from time to time.

The Storm Tech guy gave you some advice I should think that you"d listen to him change the surface take the money you were going to spend on pluging and redrilling and take a lesson or two

Yeah I had the erratic issue but 2000 grit no polish has solved the problem, it still has enough length but the over/under reaction is no longer there and it works a bit better on more oil, thus increasing versitility and making it more of the ball I wanted on purchase.

yea, i think ill see if he can take it to 2000 abralon.  The thing is, is that I sanded the ball down to 600 grit a while ago and it didnt work for me..so i had the proshop guy bring it back to OOB.  He's storm certified and he takes partial to storm himself so i assumed he knew what he was doing.

So what he did was sand it up to 1500 grit wet sand and polished it with reacta shine.  How would that be different from sanding to 600 grit and hitting it with step 2?

The grit in the compound, Step #1, #2 and #3 are not the same as using a piece of sandpaper. By leaving the sanding at 600 and then polishing up, you'll have more of a "bitting" surface under the polish than if you were to sand to 1500 and use the Step#2.

Do you have a newer video, Noy?  Because I too have a tendency to disbelieve you've gone from low revs to medium high.  If we could see your game we could give you many more pointers and ball advice.

Woa! this thread is kinda old hehe.  Instead of redrilling my Agent, I went in to a third pro shop guy, who as of late, I've come to develop a good relationship with (the only guy of the 3 I visit to remember my name and keep my phone # in arms reach).  Anyways, I asked him to measure me out to his standards and found that the first two guys had my spans too long (about 1/2 an inch!) which caused me to grip the ball too much.  anyway, he slug plugged my thumb and repositioned and repitched my thumb to where he thought it should be.  It helped my game mucho!  A lot more consistency and a lot less effort to hold onto the ball.  My revs decreased a little due to this but still enough to get the ball moving.

I'd call myself a pure stroker now as I dont really put any effort into getting the ball down the lane.  As long as I hit my mark, Im fine.  As for the video, I'm gonna wait untill I get a used 15lb ball as I am moving up to 15lb...already have my 15lb plastic, just waiting for the strike ball.  You can see my from my allbowling journal that my scores are steadily going higher and higher...almost hit 3 200's in league play but was still getting used to my spare ball.
