RIP Virtual Gravity

Its a sad day...and a happy one.

Sad part- One of best go-to balls died. I tried everything to bring her back. She just never reacted or hit the same after she hit the 30-40 game mark.

Happy part- That means I have reason to buy me a new one!!! w00t w00t!!!

no ball should die after only 30-40 games. Every compnay has a few here and their and all of Ebonites stuff dies after 30-40 games but that sucks Chrispy. good luck with the next one.

Total games was prolly right around 50. Like I said though, after 30-40, there was a considerable difference in carry and overall hook, so I tried to bring it back to life with everything...hot water bath, cleaning, hit it with 360, 500 then 4000 in that order, tried everything, and it just didnt want to move to the pocket on the lanes, and when I did move way in and it did get to the pocket, it couldnt carry at all. This was on both house shots and sport shots.

And like I said, it used to be a BEAST of a ball. But anyhow, Ill order me a new one today prolly. Ill also pre-order my Virtual Energy too.

And sorry, but I sold it last night to one of my co-workers for $35.

I did not get to read the original thread that you mention but that is exactly what I have been doing to my bowling balls and the reaction on the lanes is better then before. I never use the 1000, 2000 and less the 4000 abralons. Just 360 then 400 or 500 then a small amount of polish. Or just leave it at 500 without polish. Once you throw some practice shots it will be like having sanded down to 1000. I do not want to destroy too many of the new peaks and valleys that are stronger then before. That is a good thread from Roto Grip.

Yep that sounds about right. Ball is awesome out of the box, but it just doesn't last.

Some local bowlers around my area have had their VG's for around 150-180 games and they're still going strong..Is it possible Storm had some with bad coverstock composition? Like they absorbed more oil and retained it better then they should have due to a bad mixture?

I know jack**** about making balls, just tossing an idea out, in no shape or form am I making an accusation or stating a fact.

edit - Would storing a bowling ball in a more or less humid location matter to the coverstock longevity?? Would cool/dry be optimum? Or warm/humid? or does it matter? I know dry heat tends to act as an oven and the oil seeps out of the ball, say in the trunk or a sun-beaten spot in the house.

Oh, is that "The ball of the year lane 1 dynamo"?  Or is that the one the bowling alley's need to "add 5 lanes" for?  Not sure, help me out since this is a "Storm" equipment board after all.........  Gee, ever think The guy liked the reaction of the ball before it's 40th game..  Maybe that's why he wants another one?

Have you taken the cover down then given it the dishwasher/rejuvenator methods?  I've never had luck w/the hot water bath method.  The surface needs to be brought down 1st, then oil extraction, then brought back up.  Doing that out of order may have prevented all of the oil from extracting fully.  Just a thought.

Keep the suggestions rolling in folks - I bought a used VG and this thing reacts a lot weaker than I thought it would.  It has close to the same amount of hook as my similarly drilled Spitfire.  I do have it drilled with a weak pin, but I thought this ball would be a lot more aggressive.  I had it at 2000 with a light polish I've dulled it at 2000 and am about to take it lower.  Thanks!

4000 grit over 500 will not take it to 4000 grit. Are you disagreeing with that? His method will take it to 1000 or so, but definitely not 4000 (which is what I thought he was trying to do). If that was not his goal... my mistake. It's people like you who are ruining this site.

You said 4000 over 500 will do pretty much nothing..which is in fact, wrong. Are you disagreeing with that? And a 360 -> 500 -> 1000 ball does NOT roll like a 360 -> 500 -> 4000 ball.. Are you disagreeing with that?

His goal was to take it Factory finish 4k, which is the method described in the linked thread, which he also described as the method he resurfaced it at..Not a "true" 4k (1k -> 2k -> 4k) which will squirt until it hits the pins, and hook LESS then the method he used, regardless of what ball it is.

It's people like you who spread misinformation that ruin the site. Sorry for being blunt about you not knowing what you're talking about, I'll try to sugarcoat it next time.

i dont understand about ball death..  i have a VG too and its way over 100 games on it and still hit hard and still my go to ball on my scratch league..probably the only thing i do different is (maybe coz i'm anal) i clean my stuff right after league with 50/50 simple green and water..  oh well.. and have it sand twice a month or every other week

I did have it drilled to my PAP, stacked - pin slightly to the right of the bridge, thinking I needed to go weaker with the layout because the ball is a hook monster.  I love this layout on my medium hook balls.  I'm completely fine with a less aggressive back end as long as I can get this thing to hook for the longer sport patterns.  We'll see how it goes...
