why doesnt my shift hook....?
« on: May 30, 2007, 09:38:22 PM »
just wondering if anyone else is having this problem...flare on this ball is tight and movement on the lanes is less than impressive.  first ball with newer cover that just doesnt seem to get moving on the backends for me...while in reno the genius' at the storm booth told me the ball was rolling out.  i am not new to the game and know when my ball is rolling out.  its really a shame they pay these people to work the booth and represent Storm.

What is your PAP, axis tilt, ball speed and rotation
AND
what are you using that IS hooking on the same oil pattern and how is it drilled and how is the surface changed, if it is?

Without having info on the ball's layout or your PAP, it sounds like this is related to the Layout more than anything.  IF you know it post the pin to PAP distance as well as the MB to PAP distance.  This will give us the greatest understanding as to what is happening.

I don't know something must be wrong.  When I threw one of these it was quite the hook monster.

It sounds like it's drilled for control versus a big hooker.  I believe the sport pattern layout in the drill sheet mentions that and the flare will be tighter so one will need to go straighter.  At least, that's my interpretation of what you wrote.

disclaimer:  I am relatively new to layouts.  I just added my two cents because my shift was punched out last Thursday.  I think it does need some coverstock work.  Not much, just a little tweaking.

pin under middle finger cg out and key near my thumb...did not hook...so i had the storm booth put a hole in it...and it appears that the hole they put in it was on my axis which now i understand will kill flare...this after i asked for a flare increasing weight hole.  pin is probably almost 6 inches from pap...my t road with pin a bit closer 5.5 from pap, cg barely out and no weight hole...hooks circles around this ball

6" pin to PAP is hardly an aggressive drill, that could be problem 1.  The postion of the XH certainly isn't helping the ball flare more, possible problem 2.  What is the surface of this ball?  Do you still have it at the OOB polished finish?  A glossy surface + a weak layout will not produce a big hooking ball.

For me with pin under ring 4 1/4 pin to pap and the key next to my thumb the ball is very erractic reacting. Sometimes it hooks like a bat out of he11 and other times it went dead straight when other balls like it's cousin the Mystic hooked a ton still.

Well i put it down to 500 and then put columbia 2000 polish right on top and now the ball is very consistent in reaction. My pro shop driller had the same problem and used 1000 and then high gloss brunswick on his, same thing happened the ball works very well for him with alot of high sets.

So if you are lower revs go 500 and high gloss or more hand go 1000 then high gloss, if wood i would say 1000 or even 2000 high gloss would be better.

I agree with WSU stroker that 6 inch from PAP is not going to help and a weight hole on your Pap. I would of laid it out 4 to 5 from pap with the key 4 to 4.5
from pap. Weight hole i think 2 inches down from pap or straight across on your val would of been better.

I always find it helpful for me at least to always try the ball with the manufacture shine then if i don't like it to sand it all off, put the grit i want then shine it back up.

I also agree with WSU on the fact 6" Pin to PAP pretty much makes it all coverstock and rev rate with extremely little help from the core.

If you look on here (i'm lazy and don't feel like finding the link) i've posted on my shift. It is very even reacting and does not hook the whole lane though it does hook a decent amount, it is not the Hook Monster but that is not bad IMO.

i am having similar trouble with my shift.  i have the pin above and between tne fingers and the key is 3 inches to the right if the thumb.  no xtra hole or anything fancy.  the only conditions i can use it on is drier conditions or if there is nocarry down.  i am a stroker with 15-16 mph, med revs. i just cant get this thing to move.  on the same conditions my absolute inferno hooks across the head pin.  i hate to adjust the cover but at this point i will try anything.  this is my first storm and am disappointed so far.

Sorry about your bowling ball...

This is exactly why you need to know the bowlers PAP prior to drilling new equipment...my advise to avoid these things in the future...invest in a educated proshop (certified) operator that knows you well and knows your game well. Much like a good butcher will sell you the better meat.

The fact that your flare is tight is not a bad thing, especially when you've seen a ball die due to "overflaring".

That being said, every ball, regardless of it's layout, or core design, or cover, NEEDS FRICTION TO HOOK.  One of my Furys has a very tight track due to it's layout, so I put a little polish on it, moved outside on the lane and the ball carries everything!!

There's a misconception that every ball needs to be drilled strong to score.  A pearl particle ball such as the Shift can be great towards the outside since it still has plenty of late movement, yet the particle load helps the movement to be less "jumpy" than a pearl reactive.  Good luck.
