Short pattern balls

I made a post in another fourm about ball selection on the viper/cheetah to control the backend.  I have a 15.5-16 mph ball speed with about a 325 rev rate.  I use storm and rotogrip equipment and looking to bowl alot this fall in the regionals.  I have talked to several pro shops and got differant answers from all them so I thought I'd give this a try.  Something weeker with a strong layout seems to be over/under, so would something strong with a week layout be the way to go?  Thanks.

Go to throw the Tropical Heat tonight, it seems to work really well, just remember to drill it weak.

I have a VG drilled 45x21/2x65. That is the best control ball I have ever thrown.

I like to still use stronger equipment but either alter my release or drill the ball specifically to make it lay off downlane and control the lanes, that way you can keep your ball in play a lot easier than with one that is hooking like someone kicked it downlane.

take a fast or furious w/polish drill it pin just outside your middle finger and the cg as close to your track as you can place a weight hole on your negative axis point and that ball will be money on extreme dry and or really short had a scamp with that layout and bowled late squad at hoinkee years ago and ripped the s#*t outta that shot and made some serious bank too.

Thanks for all the post.  I can ajust my release pretty well for most part.  I said in my other post about weaker balls being over/under because of a ball I tried on the cheetah.  It was a storm fast with a 4 1/4 x 4 with a 3 in buffer, so the pin was just below my ring finger and about an inch right.  If I put hand in the ball it was real jumpy, and lucky to make it to the pocket without hand coming up the back. I also tried a hyroad with a 4 1/2 x 5 1/2 layout and it was pretty smooth, but overall just too strong with a 4000 finish and a little too much skid polished.

Try changing the drilling on that Fast. Put the pin above the ring finger area at about 5" pin to PAP, put the CG about 0-1" from the VAL, put a weight hole either 2.5" below or past your PAP, depending on where the CG winds up being. (A P1 or P2 weight hole location is good.)  Try a P3000 or P4000 grit surface. That should reduce the backend and the flippiness a good deal.

Natural drilled 3.5-4 pin/strong w/360 or 500 abralon. It will hook alot for the first few shots until you get oil on the ball, then it will tame down. This drilling, you can use some hand and spin and still get it to hold pocket.

Other option would be to drill a pin down and under ring Invasion, with MB on VAL, and use NO hand, and play the roll out.

Even though the Cheetah is short, it has a lot of oil in those 35 feet. What you are saying about your Fast, is the ball isn't using up enough energy, and is just going sideways out of the oil. You move in, and not enough ball and flare to get back from out side. The Natural will allow you to go at the pocket, the way really straight players can, and the Invasion will allow you to swing it and still have enough "engine" to get around the corner.

I like the Natural on the short PBA patterns.  You really don't deal with over/under with Urethane.  OK, maybe under sometimes.  If you get it too wide (or throw it too fast ), it will labor coming back because urethane does not have the big backend that people are used to with reactive.  Very controllable.
I've scored well with it most of the time.  With that ball speed, you'll have no trouble with the Natural.  I'm pretty close to your rev rate, maybe a tad higher but I throw 17.5 at the slowest and usually around 19mph.  Even at that speed, I can use the Natural comfortably.

I think I'm gonna have to swing the Natural into my lineup more often.  I bowled on Cheetah for the first time in years last night, and was surprised to see that I had to clear about the first 10 feet to keep the ball right.  I must say I was quite shocked to see my Fast and Dark Star(in profile) peel off the spot as soon as the pattern ended.

Even more odd was that my Mars went in a straight line.  I do have a higher coat of polish on the Mars than my Nomad, Fast, and Dark Star...

That's what I'm contemplating.  I was also thinking putting the high polish back on my Nomad, Fast and Dark Star, not only to allow it to go further down the lane but make its move later as well.  Doing this would also bring the Dark Star closer to the Mars, no?

Would the mars work on the cheetah?  I tried a natural that was my friends and I didn't get along with it.  He had a 4 x 4 with a think a 3 inch buffer and he did good with it.  I threw it on a 38' house shot and left my first ever
5-7-10 and almost had the 8 pin but it fell late.  I just never could get the right motion.  I have thrown the mars on the US Open pattern and it worked pretty good with me averaging 208 for 8 games.  I used a 4 x 5 1/2 with a pin down drilling to smooth it out.  Polished it was too squirly so I took it down to 500 and back up to 4000.  The ball read the mid lanes really well with good carry but you can't play big angles with it.  I played 15 at the arrows out to 10 at 40 feet without having to move the first two games, then just made paralell ajustments untill I had to open up.
