SKID SNAP
« on: November 22, 2004, 08:26:02 AM »
HELLO EVERYONE, I AM LOOKING FOR A PEARL THAT REALLY SNAPS HARD. MY PROBLEM IS I TURN THE HELL OUT OF MY BALLS BUT THROW AROUND 20MPH.MOST PEARLS I HAVE THROWN I THROW RIGHT THREW THE BREAK.I WAS THINKING OF A TRIPLE X WITH A LARGE PIN AROUND 5 IN. HAS ANYONE OUT THERE DONE THIS AND WHAT IS THE REACTION YOU ARE GETTING LIKE? IF NOT THE TRIPLE X THEN, ANY OTHER BALLS THAT WOULD WORK FOR ME PLEASE LET ME KNOW. WOULD LIKE TO STAY WITH STORM AFTER ALL THEY ARE THE BEST!!!

Hi there leftykingpin,

First of all please don't use capital letters. It means "shouting" when you write in caps.

You should provide more info:
- What are those "most pearls" you have thrown that skid past the break point. Which balls?
- What are the lay outs?
- What is the lane condition?
- Your axis rotation and tilt?

You may be using length drillings on those pearls which may not be correct choice for your speed..

Please tell us more..

Thanks,
Burak

hi there burak, I am planning to get a triple x factor today. since this will be my first try at a pearl ball, i was wondering what lay out would be a good choice. i play on wood lanes, medium oil conditions, and i dont know what my axis rotation and tilt, and i guess i have medium speed and revs, so would a skid and snap layout be ok? and you said that length drilling may not be the right choice for your speed. please tell me more about one's ball speed in relation to a skid and snap layout.  thanks for the help.

If you have high speeds you want to lay your balls out to roll earlier, because if they are layed out to go long, they go way too long. If you have slow speed, you should drill for length, because you dont want anything to roll to early, and have it roll out and lose hitting power. If your a tweener, like you say you are (tweener means medium everything) then either way works fine.

if u have any old equipment left that u said went through the break point. plug them and redrill the with the pin under and next to the ring finger and swing the cg out. this should work for ur speed problem. any questions leave a message.

The rookie,

TheBowlingKid25 and smitty8288 are right.

Actually its all correct match up with the condition, speed, rev rate, rotation and tilt. "Generally" for length drillings, if one's speed is high, placing the pin below fingers might be a good choice. This reduces the flare and saves it for the backends while reducing the length in comparison to pin up drillings. If that is not enough and still skids through the break point, placing the pin closer to PAP might work (4 to 4-1/2). However, as I said before, its all about correct match up and experiment will find out the best way. Please keep in mind that surface preperation is still the biggest factor on the reaction. You may need to fine tune it also. Any experienced ball driller can decide closer solution when he/she watches one's game.

On the other hand, Robert Smith uses 5-1/2 pin to PAP distance with pin above fingers for long/heavy oil patterns. Think about his rev rate and speed.. That works for him..

Regarding your tripleX, again its too hard to suggest something without watching your actual game, but here goes my two cents:

TripleX is pretty aggressive ball for me for medium to heavier lanes, especially if there is some dry down the lane.
Since its medium conditions, wood surface and medium everything for you, I suggest:
If you are a high tracker, place the pin 5 to 5-1/2 from your PAP, over the fingers. Place the RAD/MB in strong position, around 5inches from your PAP.
If you are a low tracker, place the pin 5 to 5-1/2 from your PAP, under the bridge. Place the RAD/MB in strong position.

Please check the location of the CG before you get your tripleX. If you want skid-snap ball, "usually" you don't want a big weight hole. Therefore if you can find one with CG shifted left from the pin-MB line (talking about a righty), that should work better.

Hope this helps,
Burak

Hi there burak, I got my triple x drilled yesterday, ill try to describe to you the layout as best as i can, so here goes, the pin is 4 inches from my pap, about 1 inch above of my ring finger at approx. 1 o clock. cg about 4.5 inces from my pap with the rad in a strong position just beside my thumb. btw, the cg is slightly to left of the pin and rad line. i used it for last nights league, box condition. And this ball does go long for me, and i noticed that it doesnt snap hard but i guess the backend wasnt really clean. so i guess that this ball would really love clean backends. overall im quite satisfied with this ball, although i would still have to put more games on it,now if the polish wears off after a few games would this make the ball snappier? thanks a lot for your help.

The rookie,
I'm glad that you have satisfied with it so far.
Sometimes, when the factory polish wears off after few games, balls tend to read dry much earlier and/or harder. Just put some more games on it and check.

For me, with the same drilling on your TripleX, it was very similar to Inferno. Revs fairly earlier and makes hard arc. Only difference is, mine was drilled with lower pin placement than yours (Pin next to ring).
Mine was snappy when I bowl on fresh, heavier/longer patterns with bone dry backends. But that's me

Let your driller watch the reaction. He/she may fine tune it with the surface.

Burak
