Slightly Older storm balls
« on: April 23, 2010, 07:04:03 PM »
Does anyone still use older Storm equipment like the Shift or Special Agent?

I recently redid the cover and extracted oil from my Shift and it rolled really well.  I was surprised at it's movement and how well it read the lane.  It grabs at the midlane and then arcs strongly to the pocket.

My Special Agent still has life in it as well but I like that ball better polished with it's current layout.

well i got 3rd drill shift (1st owner was a righty, 2nd a lefty and now me, a lefty as well, so it looks kinda funny with all the plugs around the ball)

recon the surface and polished it.

4 1/2 pin to pap. unlike yours, mine kinda goes long and straight and arcs late for me. and like the tech sheet says, it can handle a decent amount of oil.

but is it me or does the cover get dings and scratches easily? its like every time i bowl with it no matter at which centre, it comes back with noticeable chip and scratches here and there.

other than that, im really loving my shift. and the amount of money im saving from buying used equipment.. i think im not going to buy brand new gear in a while. i just need to get to know more ball junkies and i can become a used ball junkie myself.

I believe mine is layout #2 and it does handle medium oil well.  I played the same line with my T-road pearl and I left buckets because it came back too late from that deep in the oil.

It's double slugged right now because of span and pitch changes.  I am considering putting in the IT bottom if possible and begin using it.

I have to check but it seems that every Storm and Roto Grip ball I used now with the exception of the Natural and Rapid Fire Solid are nicked up.  I have Twisted Fury(freebie that I had plugged redrilled) and that cover barely has any marks on it.  My Total Bedlam is holding up well too.

I don't usually buy used balls but I shop the closeout sections for bargains.

yeh i have a power groove that seems to hold up better, but then again thats entry level stuff so im not sure if its a fair comparison.since u have a some higher end stuff from other brands holding up well, then i guess its a storm thing.
Im not too sure, storm did a good job marketing their gears, im kinda sticking to storm still.

but like one storm fan said to me "if its not on the track, dont be too bothered by it"

o yeh closeouts are another good source for prolonging the lifespan of wallets huh.i mean covers can chip and nick, but not my wallet life. haha

Funny you should mention the track area.  We have a local bowl that puts wear on the ball's track.  I've got some on my T-Road and Special Agent.  With my Twisted Fury in the same house my track area is fine.  I think the Storm covers may be a little soft compared to some other brands.

Yeah, I have 2 Shifts & an Attitude Shift...  I tried to convert my arsenal to the VG & the Gravity Shift, but those balls acted way different...  I am just now getting comfortable w/the Virtual...  I tried a lot of surface changes by hand b4 finally getting it right after scotchbrite green pad & Storm Step 2....  Now the ball looks good.

My 1st Shift has a pin above ring & my 2nd a pin just below ring both w/the MB just right of thumb... I still love them along w/my Attitude.  They are more angular than my VG & a lot more than my Gravity Shift.

I took my shift to my driller today to see if he can install the IT system in it.  I am going to put it back into the rotation.

I still use a Shift and Spit Fire. A month ago I started using my Special Agent again after a thorough cleaning and resurfacing. All still work great. I actually prefer the SA to my newer Virtual Gravity.

If you do the proper maintenance there's no reason any ball can't be good for a few years.

After finding out my driller got a revivor oven I've been using my Special Agent a lot. It's going to  be my benchmark ball going into my PBAX league this summer. It is the only Storm ball I've owned that has held its reaction for a long time. I've had a T-Road Pearl and Rapid Fire Pearl lose a significant amount of reaction and nothing I did brought it back. It's very possible its me and not the balls, but its frustrating nevertheless. The SA makes up for their short lifespan.

Although, I have switched over to Columbia from Storm. There was always one storm ball I wish I still had. The Paradigm Domination. Perfect ball I had for a house shot. You could swing it, go up the boards, throw it inbetween your legs, it always hit the pocket lol. I made the drop to 16 this year and that ball was 16, so it had to go. Hurt my wrist. There was a NIB 15 on ebay not to long ago and I forgot about it and when I went back it was too late . Still on the hunt for a NIB, not a plugged one. I remember how beautiful it was New and can''t bring myself to a plugged one.

As leftyhomer was saying, my issue with Storm was longevity. These coverstocks got knicked, chunked, scratched to death. I felt like even after 400 games LOL my Domination still had a good overall reaction but nothing like out of the box. My secret Agent lost significant reaction. My X-Factor Ace still got it done though. I''d still have them all but just can''t do 16 anymore.
