Alpha Crux
« on: April 13, 2018, 02:52:59 PM »
I purchased this ball a few years ago when it was released. I was going through a transition form 16 lb equipment to 15 lb equipment and this was the first ball I purchased. I practiced with it a lot, but on league nights it spent its time in my locker, and then at one point it when home with me permanently. I didn't like the reaction, I hated it. I had it drilled pin over fingers. When i rolled it, it just seemed to labor down lane or it would just roll out. So i took it home permanently and the experiment with the Alpha Crux was over and I moved on to other equipment.

Flash forward to January 2018. I had been struggling on league nights mightily for two to three months. I bowled 2-3 nights a week and it just wasn't fun anymore. Everyone noticed, I would get so upset, I would take it out on anyone nearby including my wife. I had some demons that needed exercised. I did some coaching and some talking to get my head right. I bought a brand new 900 Global Covert Ops to give me a look that wasn't anything I had in the bag. The ball was good, rolled it a couple weeks and then it cracked. I was not happy. So in exchange at the shop I got a Cherry Vibe. Great ball. Drilled it pin under fingers like my old Midnight and loved it. But there was just something missing.

I went home from league about 8-10 weeks ago and started going through my old equipment. I even went so far as to get my old 16 lb equipment out and started practicing with them. That was a terrible idea. So i went home and regrouped again and then it clicked. Why not take the Alpha Crux back to the shop and have it redrilled pin under the fingers? What could it hurt. Forty dollars was better than spending $150+ on a new ball anyway. So i took it in and talked to my really good friend who does the ball work at my center and explained to him what i wanted to do. He obliged. A week later I had a "brand new" Alpha crux. I was hesitant to throw it in league at first and it just sat in the shop. So my buddy brings it down and says try it, whats it gonna hurt. So i threw it in game two and ran the first 6 strikes for a 268 game. The ball had come to life. It was something i haven't seen in a long time. I was starting to get my mojo back. I have used it a few weeks now and I cant put it down! Its bringing me back! The ball rolls with a very strong midlane and a beastly backend movement. I hadn't seen this all season. My lessons and mental game adjustments have paid off. My scores have been going up and I am once again enjoying myself on the lanes. Last night was my season high 254-257-279 for a 790 series. I am humbled.

Congratulations, nice bowling.

I learned a long time ago not to give up on a ball too soon without trying different lane conditions, surfaces, and even layouts.

Never realized all those 2+ year old "dud" bowling balls I own that moved from the bag to the closet have now become all-star balls.
Who knew! lol

Seriously, I agree with you.  Sometimes a couple of my numerous "retired" balls get a second chance and seem to fill a spot in the bag that didn't happen for long the first time.
Case in point I retired my 300C solid a few of years ago.  It was a good ball, but not a great ball at the time.
Tried it recently on the new/current THS our center is putting out and viola!  Can't put it down. It's like it was made specifically for the current shot.
Conversely, I have tried other closet "duds" with no chance for a second life.

Has anyone noticed how many Alphas the pros have in their bags even with the Code X out?

Because they can still get them or have a stash! I love my Code X but if I could have gotten an Alpha without paying a premium, then I would have. But the Code X is perfectly fine as a replacement for the common bowler
