Special Agent drill

Storm Troopers,

Got a good steady bowler, bowls on PBA Challenge league, newer synthetics, 300 rpm, PAP 5 1/2 o and 1 up, med speed, can vary hand positions and speed. Wants a ball that reads midlane and continuous. Has a few pin over, shiny pieces and wants something to read earlier but still continue.Has a pin over ring NoMercy #1 and Hawg Wild pin beside ring(3 3/8) stacked, and wants more mid lane read but once again continuous. Wants to add either Shift or T-Road Pearl for a longer and flippier ball for later. For this Special Agent I am thinking pin under ring(4 1/4 to PAP) and cg kicked right with Virt Mass Bias right of thumb, halfway between VAL and palm center line. 2 oz top weight ball will be just under 1 ounce side without weight hole that can be added later to fine tune. I felt 3 3/8 full lev position may be too soon and too much, but at 4 1/2 will still read mids and continue. Thoughts ? He will also add a heavy oiler later...possibly Awesome Hook. And to repeat, later add a high pin Shift or T-Road to be longer. Anyone tossing one of these laid out like this?, Al

precisionshopsteve,

He really wants a pin under ball, with the pin to PAP at 4 1/4 and the proposed cg and VMB layout , this would be a 80 deg. drill. Still too strong?

Steve,   Thanks. He definitely wants a ball that reads mid strong...he has other pieces that tend to skid too much early in the mids. Also this is for the tougher PBA patterns and not the THS that gives you mid read once you bounce right of the wall. I would definitely put pin up and further if he wanted it for THS. Sure looks like one team liked it at the Nationals in Reno. May have to borrow this one for a few tosses of my own, and maybe put holes in one for myself. Last Storm was the original Eraser. Will also be attending the demo for the Shift next Monday. Will decide then which long ball for him, pin up Shift or T-Road Pearl. The Domination works well for a few I have drilled, but I hear these 2 pieces are even better. Thanks again, Al

Alright, since you guys all seem to know what you're talking about, I may as well go ahead and ask some questions that boggle my mind about bowling balls:

1) Does top weight and pin length of a new ball make a huge difference? Like, does a 2 inch pin do something that a 4 inch pin doesn't?

2) How does one go about finding their PAP? Or is that universal for all bowlers? I've heard both answers

3) Anything else I should know about top weight/pin length/etc. before I go out and grab myself a new piece?

Thanks for the help!

Well guys I punched this one up for my guy...went with my proposed pin under ring(4 1/2 to PAP) and cg kicked right with VMB right of thumb center 2" and a 80 deg. drill. Ended with 3/4 positive and 0 finger/thumb, no weight hole needed due to low top weight. Left OOB finish. Even though he wanted this for his tougher challenge league next Tues., he couldn't resist tossing it at this local house when I delivered it to him hot off the press. THS, wood, fair amount of oil and oil to 34 and buff to 40. He threw the first six before the game started, with a look of WOW when he turned around. He said...That's the ball I've been looking for. He started game with first 7 and left a 4 pin, didn't move enough and then split. Shot 237 first game and ended 739 series. He is very happy. He said WOW alot, and this guy has quite a few different balls and layouts. Ball flared about 6 inches and had a very tight bowtie. I was concerned with a 3 3/8 Pin to PAP that he might overflare and migrate the bowtie. A hole low on the VAL probably would have created this also and been too much. Ball is just right where it is. He moved progressive left with feet as the night went on to stay in the oil and ball worked well even as he moved in. After the set and him winning his brackets, some of the other scratch league bowlers had to ask him for a free toss of which he let them. The guys were impressed. This is a nice piece. Aggressive...yes, but smooth and continuous also. I was very happy for him of course, but now I'm thinking...do I need one more ball before Reno?   Al
