Hypothetical Arsenal
« on: December 26, 2006, 01:45:26 AM »
I was wondering if some of you experts could give me some advice on an arsenal idea.  Basically I have one ball that I really love and I am wondering if I can mold an arsenal around that and have 3 balls that I really love.

First off, I have a Thunderstruck Solid that I feel is the best ball in the world.  I have it drilled with the pin an inch out to the right of my ring finger (it is not above or below my ring finger).  The cg looks like it is out about a half inch from the center of my grip.  Hopefully this helps paint some kind of picture as I leave all the drilling knowledge up to my pro shop.  She said it was just a label drilling, so I don't think there is anything special here.

Now again, I love this ball (can't convey that enough) and I am wondering if I can have this type of ball reaction in different conditions.  I have never used a ball that can do everything like the TSTRUCK.  I am wondering...  Does this mean I have found a ball that matches up good for my style of play or is this really just the perfect ball?

My league puts out a pretty good amount of oil, so I have been using my sanded Triple XTREME with an end over end roll in the first game to kind of blow out a track for my TSTRUCK.  Once there, I can TSTRUCK any which way I choose (side roll or end over end still if required) and it always carries everything.

I can't use the Triple XTREME as well as I can use the TSTRUCK and I have noticed that the Triple wants to have a really late angular turn which is kind of touchy.  I notice that the Special Agent has an arcing motion like the Thunderstruck and I am wondering if I would do better with that instead of the Triple XTREME.

If I could have another ball as perfect as my TSTRUCK, I really think I could do a lot better in my league.  After using the Dark Thunder and the Thunderstruck Solid, I am really thinking I like the solids with a hard arc or arcing motion.

The most I would want to have in my arsenal is 4 balls including one plastic.

What do you think?
Special Agent
Thunderstruck Solid (Polished with Reacta Shine)
Thunderstruck Pearl (Not at all sure about this one)
Blue Dot

I am not sure how I would drill the Special Agent, but I would want to be sure before I did it.  I am totally lost on the third slot.  I am not sure if I should get a Pyro for carrydown or get a strong pearl ball that could go longer when the lanes dry out.  As of right now, the TSTRUCK seems to be able to cover everything except really heavy oil and really dry lanes.  Even in those cases, I can make it work (just not as easily).  I want to get a good arsenal that is versatile like the TSTRUCK and will allow me to fill in the gaps with hand positions etc.

What do you think?  If I consider my TSTRUCK to be perfect, should I just drill the Special Agent the same way?  Also, what should I be thinking in the 3rd slot?

I would put a Fired Up in your 3rd slot.  Will be a much different hook shape than your 1 and 2 balls, much more skid/flip.  But it's a must have when the shot moves in and you need a ball to retain energy through the front part of the lane.  If it ends up being to flippy for your liking, you can always knock the shine off a bit to make it a bit smoother at the break point.

I've been lucky long enough...now I'd like to get good.

Yeah I think the Special Agent is going to work out.  It is just a question of how to drill it to get the most use out of it.  If I could have a sanded ball that could work above my TSTRUCK but be as versatile, that would really work for my league.  I could probably keep using the sanded ball longer and switch to the TSTRUCK when the coast is clear.  The way I am doing it now is to really try to switch out my Triple XTREME ASAP.

On the 3rd slot, I've used a Tropical but have since moved up in weight.  I tried a Jolt Pearl but wasn't happy with it and sold it to a friend.  I had way more success with the Tropical and I am wondering if it was the coverstock.  I put a really weak drilling on the Jolt Pearl thinking it was going to be a superbeast like the Tropical and I think I totally screwed up on that decision.

I know a lot of people might recommend a mid-level pearl like a TSTRUCK Pearl, Spit Fire, or Fired Up.  I am not really sure how to even begin to tackle this debate.  Then I know a lot of people will recommend a Pyro also.  I am not sure how to come to an informed decision on the third slot.  Of course the best way to know is to try everything, but I am not exactly a staffer.
