Starting over,need new arsenal
« on: January 07, 2007, 05:54:39 PM »
I'm 45 years old,I quit bowling back in 1989.Back then,I bowled 3-4 nights a week, averaged between 200 and high league avg. 216.I tried the Regional tour, got my butt handed to me,came home and threw the balls in the closet.Every 3-5 years I would dig them out to see if I could still do it.My old equipment was a Blue Pearl Hammer, med oil,Black Hammer, heavier oil,Brunswick Black Diamond, dry.About 2 months ago,my work schedule changed, and I started subbing on a mixed league. Now,the whole technology to balls has changed, and I am kinda lost. After 8 weeks,I am carrying a 195.My problem is the lanes are more slick than anything, other than Regional events,I can remember.I am a 13-15mph stroker, but have to slow my old Blk Hammer down, and throw straight down the 8 board with all the crank I can get on it to get back to the pocket.I bought a Hot-Rod Hybrid for a corporate event last year, and after roughing it up,it moves a little more for me.I want to get 1 or 2 more balls,as I plan on hitting some tourneys in the future, but alot of the info on this board has me confused.I have no idea what all the specs posted about balls mean.I'm not stupid, its just that back in the day,you had a max of 1 oz imbalance, top, right left, bottom,to be legal.I have 6 300 games in my past life,so I can bowl,I just feel like I am bringing a knife to a gunfight. My favorite shot in the past was down and in,2 arrow, peak about the 5-6 board.I would consider my Hot-rod a good drier condition ball, but would like 1 ball for 3-5 boards more movement, and possibly 1 for even heavier oil.If there is a website that explains all the spec numbers, that would be helpful also.Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

If you already have a Hybrid, i would recomend a Fire Diablo for heavier oil. And Thunderstruck pearl to go in between the hybrid and diablo. Take the hybrid up to its original grit and you should be able to use it on med and drier lanes.

I went to the Storm site and it recommended the Pyro, but I'm not really wanting an angular reacting ball. After reading some more post, maybe a Special Agent?I wonder if the Thunderstruck would fall between these?I really want a smooth reaction where I can play similar lines and change balls as conditions dictate.I'm not really comfortable playing the severe inside lines with angular finish I see on TV.I'm more like the Norm Duke playing the Spitfire down and in earlier this year on TV.Most of my bowling back in the day was 2 arrow to extreme outside. For several years and a couple of 300 games was playing a Brunswick Black Diamond straight down the 2 board. The furthest inside i rember playing was across the 3rd arrow.I dont see how these guys play that far inside and control the angular finish consistantly, but obviously they do.I just don't see myself playing that way. Thanks!
