Step down from Sure Lock??
« on: April 09, 2017, 08:36:37 PM »
Got a Sure lock a few weeks ago. Like the ball a lot but i need something a little less aggressive for medium-medium/heavyconditions...something that wont burn up. My sure lock doesnt really burn up on these conditions but i want something a little bit more playable. I dont generate a ton of revs (low to average revs) and my speed is average at 15mph-ish. I generally play pretty strait angles but im starting to try to learn how to move in to create a better angle. So i guess i want something with a little more length and a more definded back end (i dont think pearls would match my game tho). Idk whether to go with a slightly weaker solid or go to a hybrid matte. I like the matte finish it seems. Whats something under the sure lock but still pretty strong, as i generally need stronger stuff than what the lane normally would require. Id prefer storm/roto line but really im open to anything.

Ive been researching DD Trick, dv8 grudge hybrid, timeless (although not so much now after reading the reviews on here), dv8 vandal smash/destroy, track cyborg, paradox trilogy. Again tho, im open to whatevs

While I believe the Grudge Hybrid would be less than the Sure Lock I don't think it would be enough separation that would allow you to play straighter, more comfortable angles. It's still a really strong ball. Kind of surprised me at first but after looking into it more a lot of people had it just as strong as the original Grudge just longer with more shape on the end. Mine really gets into a nice roll but it isn't as early as the heavy oilers.

The other balls you listed could fit the bill though. I think you especially might like the Dare Devil Trick for that role. A Vandal Smash might not be far off either. I'm not as familiar with the Vandal Destroy or original Cyborg. The Trilogy is pretty angular and clean down the lane. Different motion than the Trick or Smash, although it could work as a step down from the Sure Lock too.

As you get more comfortable moving in and creating steeper angles the Sure Lock will come into play for you more. As strong as that ball is it surely (aha) saves energy and has a lot of power through the pins. Doesn't burn up early and should do very well as long as it's in the oil. I'm interested to see what people are saying about it after a couple months have passed but for now it looks like Storm has released one of it's best balls in the past few years. And they've had some really good ones lately.

Yeah im happy with the sure lock. I was affraid at first cuz mostt ppl say those really strong balls arent good for avg-less than avg players like myself. It holds well for me if theres oil and it crushes the pins if i do my part. But if its dryer in the front i have to work hard to keep my length and avoid hitting weak. Hopefully a ball with a little less powerful coverstock will allow me to put some more hand in it and really crank on it when the big Storm is too much.

Maybe one of the other Locks?  Should give a little different look going from a solid to a hybrid or pearl version.

I have seen several good players ball down to a Haywire from top of the line shells. There is still a ton of cover on the Haywire, but the motor lets the ball clear the fronts much easier before it digs in and starts to corner. And as a symmetric ball, it tends to transition from skid to hook to roll in a way that is easier to see and read. May be an option to consider. Certainly many good pieces out there worth taking a look at.

Dare Devil Trick is a great step-down from the Sure Lock.  IMO  You can always hit the DD Trick with Step Two from Storm and that will give it more length.  I do like the Haywire observation from above and I'll agree with him, but the Trick is the newest and we ALL like the newest one out.

Dare Devil Trick "sounds" like it would fit the bill for you. The only reason, me personally, I recommend symmetrical balls over asymmetrical balls for newer bowlers, is that every variation of release will be magnified in an asymmetrical ball. Symmetrical balls generally are a touch more forgiving with missed releases, although that isn't always the case %100 of the time (less).  8)
