Storm Chaser Server Security Breach
« on: December 29, 2006, 07:20:57 AM »
I received the following email from the Storm Chasers website.

In response to a compromise of one of our website servers, we have detected a potential security breach which included credit card numbers, security codes and addresses of customers placing online orders at www.stormchasers.net. We are taking steps to determine the extent of the breach and how the breach occurred. Until we have confirmed that the information can be kept completely secure, we have removed your personal information from our servers.

While we do not have evidence of misappropriation of any information, we would strongly recommend that you take immediate action to protect yourself against any possible unauthorized charges against the credit card listed below. We recommend you review your recent credit card activity and contact your credit card company immediately to let them know of the potential breach and possible disclosure.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. If you should need further assistance or have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact our customer service department at 1-800-814-5750 or security@stormchasers.net.

Yeh, I got two of those emails with last four digits of credit card number/expiration date letting me know that those cards may have been compromised.  Fortunately, both of those cards have already been canceled so hopefully I won't have anything to worry about.

Mabey it's a marketing ploy by Storm to come out with a new ball.
I can see it now:

Storm "Eraser Chaser"

then the counterpart to that ball:

Storm "Eraser Chaser Security Breech"

Good for you. (Sarcasam Off)

This kind of thing happens.  If you see a $3000.00 Order on your next credit statement, then youll know if you are a victim.

Sarcasm?

It happens but it doesn't have to happen.  I have had this sort of warning come to me a couple times in other types of companies.  The funny thing is that I was   just about to order a couple things off that site so it was a good thing that I didn't yet...

I just got one each in the snail mail today(1/6) - Storm and Roto. MasterCard advised cancelling the card even if there were no unknown charges. I cancelled. I don't know about you, but I find this irritating. My orders were placed months ago - why do they(Storm and Roto) need to store the credit card info on their servers at all - most online merchants only save the info if you expressly tell them to by signing up for an account with a password(somewhat of a joke - no?) - or that is their claim anyway.

I got 2 notifications by postal mail today as well.  I cancelled one credit card that Storm Chasers had on file, another was from about 2 years ago(again, why do they keep that info for that long is beyond me).
