Junior Gold Help
« on: January 28, 2020, 09:34:57 AM »
Hi, I'm 17 years old and this summer I am participating in the 2020 Junior Gold Championships in Las Vegas.
Balls I currently have are:
Physix
Pro Motion
IQ Tour Solid
IQ Tour Emerald
Pitch Black
Hy-road Pearl
Spare Ball

I can only bring 5 balls and I am a 2 hander so I obviously need to bring my spare ball. What other balls should I bring? And are there any other tips or advice about Junior Gold would be appreciated!
Thanks, Caleb Jans

Things we learned last year at Jr Gold with my son.

1. Balls.  you can only take 5 to the lanes for the actual event, but you can bring as many as you like to the practice sessions.  You get a practice session on each pattern and you can bring as many as you like to the practice.

2. while were on practice.. KEEP DETAILED NOTES!!!!  what works and what doesnt. what surface.. etc

3. Take or go buy some abralon/Siaar/trucut pads.  you may need to adjust surfaces for each days patterns.. play with that during practice

4. While at the practice session try to throw balls over the entire house, not every lane but maybe segment it in 1/4s..  We did not do that and the notes we kept were medium off.  lane topography matters

5. practice practice practice before you go.  and not just striking.. play different lines, different angles force yourself to do things you normally wouldnt do, because at JR gold.. your gonna

6.. and most important.. HAVE FUN.  yes its going to be hard.. and you may not do well.. My boy stunk it up for 3 of the 4 days, very humbling experience for him, but in the end it helped him for HS Bowling knowing how much more he had to learn.

See if you can learn to shoot spares with the pitch black. If so, that frees up another spot in your bag.

All of the other suggestions are spot on. Take everything to the practice sessions and see what works. Make sure to try different lines. My son locked into what he thought he had to play off a practice session and then on tournament day, shot played completely different in one house.

Make sure to stay calm. Keep a level head. If you listen to whomever is going with you now, make sure to once the tournament starts. In the heat of the tournament, you may not see the changes necessary. They might.

Oh yeah, see if you can find the patterns from prior years and print them off. They disappear just before it starts.
