Storm has launched a new line. The first release in the SPI Lab line is called the LEVEL. This unique cover formulation called RPM helps to create urethane shape without utilizing urethane material. This means the ball will absorb oil, reducing the carry-down that you see with urethane balls.

I first tested the Level on a broken down house shot. It wasn't my first choice for environment but it was all that was available. The biggest immediate difference that I noticed between the Level and my urethane balls was its ability to shape more down-lane. The early friction was a bit of an obstacle for the urethane balls but the Level really continues much better. I feel like it does this without a dramatic change in down-lane shape which means it should give you the same great control as urethane when the backends are hooking or you need to control flatter lane patterns.

I did get a chance to test the level in league later in the week. I struggled a bit more with the fresh pattern because our lane panels want to hook early, but our pattern is longer and higher volume. This is pretty much the worst environment for balls which roll early and slow down in the backend but I did see more use throwing the level left to right than I did with Urethane in the same spot. The level gives me an even smoother but earlier alternative to the Tour DynamX which is a favorite of mine.

This ball should be a staple in the tournament bag and great for anyone who needs to control the back-ends. The reduced carry-down should make it particularly useful for lefties and speed dominant players who want to stand on top of the friction, but don't want to lose the backends as quickly.
