One more question and I'll go away
« on: August 29, 2022, 10:08:50 PM »
If I have a new Storm product (ball) and I sand it down to 500 then up to 1500 or 2000 and add polish on a spinner would I be anywhere (ANYWHERE) close to the original Storm finishes before all this 4K Fast business?

No.  Rubbing compound is what you need if you don't want to buy a quart of Step 2.

According to Storm, this is what you need to do to replicate their factory polished finish using a spinner:

1500-grit Polished Factory Finish
1. 500-grit pad  – Sand firmly for 30 seconds on all four sides.
2. 1000-grit pad  – Sand lightly for 20 seconds on all four sides.
3. 2000-grit pad  – Sand lightly for 20 seconds on all four sides.
4. 4000-grit pad  – Sand lightly for 20 seconds on all four sides.
5. Storm® Step Two™ – Polish lightly for 15 seconds on each side.

What is interesting about this is that on a recent video I found on Youtube; Alex and Steve say that if you want to take a 4K fast finish back to 1500 polish; you sand back to 1000 or 1500 and then Step 2.  At no time did they mention anything about going all the way back to 4000.  If that was the case; then wouldnt all you need to do is take the 4K fast and add Step 2 over the top of that?

My experiences have been if you follow the Storm "chart" that gives you the equivalent finishes via a spinner that you will end up with a much finer finish than you are expecting.  1000 to Step 2 or a course rubbing compound I always felt was close to their "1500 Polish".

Step 2 is a pretty coarse compound.  Hitting the ball with a 2000 or 4000 pad beforehand is just wasting pads.

Since I don't really want to buy an entire quart of Storm's Step-2 compound, is there something comparable that comes in a smaller amount and that would give a similar result?

I had good luck with this over 2000 or 3000. Unfortunately it seems the smaller size is also sold out. Actually, it looks like they're no longer even making this product which is unfortunate.

3m rubbing compound

Auto Zone, Advance Auto, Pep Boys may have it locally.

Or if you have an auto paint supply close to you the 3m super duty rubbing compound is the best I’ve used.

Get some Beans Secret Sauce. Sand 500/1000. Polish to desired reaction.
